How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Four-dimensional conformal Maxwell covariance
Statement
Let and a smooth real two-form be as in Oriented Lorentzian fields, observers and coordinate conventions. Let be a smooth dimensionless function, put with the same orientation, let be constant, and let be a smooth vector field. The Hodge operator is that of Conformal Hodge scaling in every degree. Define
Then satisfies the differential-form Maxwell equations
if and only if satisfies the same equations for , where . In addition,
If is a -unit timelike vector, then is -unit timelike and . On any oriented integration domain where the integral exists, or for a compactly supported action difference, the quadratic integral is unchanged. These are tensor identities; they do not assert Einstein-equation or matter-model invariance.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The smooth oriented Lorentzian manifold, volume form and smooth two-form of Oriented Lorentzian fields, observers and coordinate conventions, a positive smooth , a constant , and a smooth vector field . The inherited geometric setup carries as in [A1].
The Hodge operators of and satisfy for every smooth -form ; hence they agree on two-forms. (Conformal Hodge scaling in every degree)
The metric volume form in an oriented chart is . (Oriented Lorentzian fields, observers and coordinate conventions)
The inherited choice assumption is Countable Choice , not the full Axiom of Choice; the pointwise conformal identities below use no additional choice. (The Axiom of Countable Choice ())
Proof
In dimension four, . Since , [F2] therefore gives . By [F1], .
If , then the same two-form still obeys for , because the exterior derivative does not depend on the metric.
The lower tensor satisfies and . Substitution in its definition gives , hence . Raising both indices with gives .
Using step 1.1 and linearity of contraction in its vector argument, . Thus whenever the original sourced equation holds.
Since , the rescaled vector is unit timelike. Contracting the lower-tensor identity twice with yields .
Conversely, implies . Reversing the contraction equality in step 2.1 and using gives the original sourced equation; the homogeneous equation is unchanged by step 1.2.
Raising the two indices of contributes and the volume form contributes , so is invariant pointwise. Integration over the same domain preserves equality whenever defined, as do compactly supported action differences.
