How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Energy descends through an almost-regular Legendre map
Conditional theorem under the explicit almost-regular package; not a universal theorem for singular Lagrangians.
Statement
Let be smooth on an open velocity domain and let be almost regular in the sense that it is a surjective submersion onto a specified embedded image and every fibre is connected. Define . Then there is a unique smooth function with . The assertion is local in the stated domains; no global inverse velocity map is asserted.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: Smooth , its fibre derivative, the specified embedded image , surjective-submersion property, and connected fibres.
The Axiom of Countable Choice (): Assume countable choice ACω, meaning every sequence of nonempty sets has a choice function; no full Axiom of Choice is assumed.
Regular, hyperregular and almost-regular Legendre domains: all these almost-regular hypotheses are assumptions, not consequences of degeneracy.
Fibre derivative or Legendre map of a Lagrangian: , with velocity derivative .
Local normal form for submersions: a submersion has smooth local sections through every point of its target.
Proof
A tangent vector to a fibre of has the form with , since the components of are identity components and its -variation vanishes. Differentiating in this direction gives ; the terms cancel.
On a connected fibre, a smooth function whose differential vanishes is constant: it is locally constant in coordinate neighborhoods, and a locally constant function on a connected space is constant. Hence is constant on each fibre of . Define to be this common value for any point above ; surjectivity gives existence, and constancy gives well-definedness and uniqueness.
For each , [F3] gives a smooth local section of . On that neighborhood , so is smooth. These local formulas agree on overlaps because the value is already uniquely constant on each fibre. Thus globally on , .
