How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

These examples isolate the operational content of the main page. One small domino family shows what the computation-history construction is trying to force, the hierarchy example records one explicit witness for each strict containment, and the counterexample fixes the exact rule that PCP concatenates whole dominoes in order.

A computation-history domino system whose matches spell a halting run
Example
Let be the one-tape machine that, on the one-symbol input 1, has the
transition
The head starts at the left boundary, so the left move is clamped there. Its
accepting history has two configurations:
With the fresh left marker , the construction of Accepting computation histories can be encoded by modified-PCP domino matches therefore contains the exact dominoes
together with the copier , the accepting-cleanup dominoes and , and the terminal domino .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The toy machine above and its two-step accepting history.
The computation-history construction gives the displayed start, clamped-left transition, and separator dominoes, and the resulting instance has a match exactly when the machine has an accepting history, by Accepting computation histories can be encoded by modified-PCP domino matches.
Verification
Choose the three displayed dominoes in order. Their top concatenation is while their bottom concatenation is Thus the top has matched the initial block and the bottom is exactly one block ahead with the accepting configuration. No right-boundary extension is needed because the only move is the clamped left move.
After the three dominoes in step 1.1, append Every pair belongs to the construction in [L1], and the two complete rows are both Thus this instance has a match. Conversely, [L1] decodes every match back to an accepting history; here determinism leaves only . The theorem The modified Post correspondence problem is undecidable says that no algorithm can decide all such instances, even though this particular accepting instance is visible directly.
Witness languages for the proper inclusions in the Chomsky hierarchy
Example
A standard witness list for the strict containments is:
- regular versus context-free:
- context-free versus decidable:
- decidable versus computably enumerable:
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The three witness languages listed in the example.
The three containments regular context-free decidable computably enumerable are all strict, by The inclusions in the language-class ladder are proper.
Every regular language satisfies the regular pumping property, by The pumping lemma for regular languages.
Every context-free language satisfies the context-free pumping property, by The pumping lemma for context-free languages.
The acceptance problem is computably enumerable, by The Turing-machine acceptance problem is computably enumerable complete.
The acceptance problem is undecidable, by The Turing-machine acceptance problem is undecidable.
Verification
The language is context-free via the grammar . If it were regular, [L2] would give a pumping length , but pumping the word inside its first symbols changes only the number of 's. So witnesses
The language is decidable by a machine that first checks the form and then counts the three block lengths and compares them. If it were context-free, [L3] would give a pumping length for the word , but any factor with lies in at most two consecutive blocks, so pumping and changes at most two symbol counts and destroys equality of all three counts. Thus witnesses
By [L4] and [L5], is computably enumerable but not decidable. So it witnesses
These are exactly the three strict containments proved in [L1]. The point of the example is that one should keep the witnesses separate rather than expecting one language to witness every gap at once.
A domino family where matching fails unless one illegally permutes symbols inside a tile
Statement refuted
PCP permits one to reorder the symbols inside a chosen domino before concatenating it.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The one-domino PCP instance .
The companion false statement says PCP would allow internal symbol reordering, by FALSE: PCP permits reordering symbols inside a domino.
Counterexample
Consider the one-domino instance If internal permutation were allowed, the bottom word ba could be rearranged to ab, so one use of the domino would look like a match.
In actual PCP, only whole dominoes may be concatenated. Using the unique tile times gives top word and bottom word , whose first symbols differ. So the instance has no legal match.
Therefore this instance refutes the statement. It is exactly the concrete counterexample recorded abstractly in [L1].
