How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Bottom-up low-rank recompression of block contributions
Definition
Let be an admissible leaf of the finite block-cluster partition in H-matrix block representation. A factor-sum tree for is a finite rooted binary tree whose leaves carry factor pairs , for exact contributions ; each internal node denotes the sum of the exact matrices denoted by its two children. Here , is conjugate transpose, and all factors have the displayed finite dimensions.
Input: Such a tree, a rank cap , node tolerances whose sum over all nodes is at most a requested block tolerance , and the procedures/results Core-SVD recompression with rank and error tolerances and Core-SVD recompression is best at the declared Frobenius tolerance.
Procedure: Traverse the tree in postorder. At a leaf, pass its exact factor pair to core-SVD recompression. At an internal node, concatenate the returned child factor pairs, which represents the sum of the two child approximations, and pass that pair to core-SVD recompression. At every node use effective core cap and tolerance . If any call returns tolerance-not-met, return that status and node. On success, retain its factors and exact discarded-tail norm . Define the node's reported error bound by at a leaf and at an internal node. If all calls succeed, return the root factors and . Then the root matrix has rank at most and its Frobenius error from the sum of all leaf contributions is at most . A failed call means only that this chosen tree and its assigned local budgets did not produce a certificate; it does not assert that no rank- approximation of the full sum meets .
Near blocks are not passed to this routine: they are assembled and stored densely and exactly. For a leaf carrying a dense contribution , use the exact factor pair , where is the identity matrix; the routine may then compress it under its assigned tolerance.
The rank and error guarantees are proved in Bottom-up factor-sum recompression has the reported rank and Frobenius error bound ↗.
Depends on
- H-matrix block representation
- Block-cluster leaves partition the index-pair set
- Core-SVD recompression with rank and error tolerances
- Core-SVD recompression is best at the declared Frobenius tolerance
- Finite tensor arrays and the Frobenius inner product
- Cauchy–Schwarz: $|\langle x,y\rangle|\le\|x\|\,\|y\|$, with equality exactly for dependent pairs

16 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
