How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
An infinite-dimensional dual algebra with a nonrational module
Statement refuted
For every infinite-dimensional coalgebra , every unital left -module is rational and is induced by a right -comodule under the evaluation action .
Example
Let with and . Then is infinite-dimensional and its full dual is the space of all sequences with pointwise multiplication. Its regular left module is not rational and cannot be induced by a right -coaction.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A field , the direct-sum vector space , its displayed structure maps, and the full algebraic dual.
A coalgebra has coassociative and a two-sided counit ; a coalgebra map preserves both structure maps. This item checks the axioms for its displayed example. (Coalgebra and coalgebra map over a field)
has candidate convolution , unit , and rationality means each vector orbit has a finite tensor representative in . (The dual convolution algebra and rational modules)
A unital left module has an associative action and the unit acts as identity. (Unital left and right modules over a ring; unqualified module means left module)
The full algebraic dual is the space of all linear functionals, with no support restriction on their values on the basis of a direct sum. (Linear functionals and the algebraic dual )
In this example, “induced by a right coaction” means that some coaction gives the action by the evaluation formula , using the right-comodule and dual-module conventions in Right comodules, comodule maps, and subcomodules and The dual convolution algebra and rational modules.
A vector space is infinite-dimensional exactly when it has no finite basis. If a space has a finite spanning set, it cannot contain a linearly independent subset equinumerous with . (Finite-dimensional vector space, and its dimension ; infinite-dimensional means having no finite basis, If has a spanning set with elements, then every linearly independent subset of is finite with at most elements; in particular has no linearly independent subset equinumerous with )
Refutation
Given: The coalgebra, dual algebra, regular module, and evaluation action specified above.
Every vector of has finite support. On each basis vector, and . The structure maps are linear, so these equalities extend to and make the displayed structure a coalgebra.
A functional is determined by the sequence , and every sequence occurs: for a finite-support vector , define . The convolution satisfies , so under this identification is the pointwise algebra with unit . The basis vectors are linearly independent in , and the coordinate functionals are linearly independent in because evaluating a finite linear relation at recovers its th coefficient. Both independent sets are equinumerous with . By [F6], neither nor has a finite spanning set, hence neither has a finite basis; both are infinite-dimensional by [F6].
The regular action makes a unital left module because the pointwise product is associative and is its unit. At its unit vector , the orbit map is , . Its image is all of the infinite-dimensional space . If were rational, some finite tensor would represent this orbit, so every would lie in the finite-dimensional span of , a contradiction. Thus is not rational.
If a right coaction induced the regular action, write its finite tensor . The defining evaluation formula [F5] would give for every , again forcing into the finite-dimensional span of the , contrary to step 2.1. Hence no such coaction induces this action.
Step 1.1 verifies the coalgebra, step 2.1 identifies its full dual algebra, step 3.1 disproves rationality, and step 4.1 rules out an inducing coaction.
Depends on
- The dual convolution algebra and rational modules
- Right comodules, comodule maps, and subcomodules
- Unital left and right modules over a ring; unqualified module means left module
- Linear functionals and the algebraic dual $V^*=\mathcal L(V,F)$
- Coalgebra and coalgebra map over a field
- Finite-dimensional vector space, and its dimension $\dim_F V$; infinite-dimensional means having no finite basis
- If $V$ has a spanning set with $n$ elements, then every linearly independent subset of $V$ is finite with at most $n$ elements; in particular $V$ has no linearly independent subset equinumerous with $\mathbb{N}$
