How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The P1 AFEM approximation class
Definition
Assume Countable Choice. The space is the closure of in the norm, as in Zero-boundary Sobolev space as a norm closure and The Axiom of Countable Choice ().
Fix a compatible initial triangulation , its 2D NVB family from Compatible 2D newest-vertex-bisection meshes, and a weak solution of the symmetric , model in Residual indicators and data oscillation for P1 AFEM. For a conforming refinement , let be its continuous P1 zero-boundary space and define For , the approximation seminorm and class are The infimum is over a nonempty finite-budget set because is allowed. This definition concerns best energy approximation, not the number of cells selected by an algorithm. For the symmetric Laplace Galerkin solution, Céa quasi-optimality for coercive conforming Galerkin problems supplies the unique exact solution, while Galerkin orthogonality for conforming approximations gives orthogonality in the gradient inner product. Expanding the square shows that the exact Galerkin error equals .
Interface
The model, P1 spaces, and energy norm are those of Broken and conforming polynomial spaces on a matching mesh and Residual indicators and data oscillation for P1 AFEM. This class is used only in the restricted P1 Laplace optimal-complexity result on this page.

23 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
