How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The A-hat form and relative Chern character
Definition
For the real-coefficient cohomological interpretation below, assume full AC as in Characteristic forms represent topological characteristic classes over the reals. The displayed form definitions themselves use only the supplied bundles and connections.
Let be an oriented Riemannian manifold of dimension and let be the skew-symmetric matrix of curvature two-forms of the Levi–Civita connection, with curvature convention . Define The determinant and square root are formal power series in commuting even-degree differential forms; the square-root branch has constant term , and terms above degree are discarded. This fixes the A-hat normalization using the curvature convention of Chern, Pontryagin, and Euler characteristic forms.
For and a graded Hermitian Clifford module with compatible connection, use the local multiplicity space and relative curvature from Spinor and geometric Clifford bundles and connections are well defined ↗. Define the relative Chern character form by
Here is the ordinary trace if is ungraded and the even trace minus odd trace if it is graded. The cited well-definedness lemma proves this local expression patches to a global even form. For with the product connection, it is . The Chern–Weil supplier Characteristic forms represent topological characteristic classes over the reals identifies the resulting cohomology classes after passage to real coefficients; this definition asserts no integral torsion identity.
For , let be the supplied orientation sign at (Oriented smooth manifolds and oriented charts). The reference zero-dimensional Clifford module is the complex line with grading operator : it is even at a positive point and odd at a negative point. The zero-dimensional Clifford algebra is , acting by scalars. Set with the grading for which evaluation is even. Identifying a map with its value at gives . All curvature two-forms vanish, so , , and This formula is independent of any basis of and leaves its arbitrary given grading unrestricted. For with in even degree, evaluation identifies in even degree, so the relative character is the ordinary rank, consistently with the product formula above. This reference-line convention makes no assertion about a Spin lift or its isomorphism classes.
