How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Restricted maximum likelihood from error contrasts
Definition
Assume AC and a Gaussian family of the form in Gaussian branch of the linear mixed model, indexed by a nonempty parameter set . For each , let and be the latent and residual covariance matrices in Let the fixed design have full column rank with . Fix an error-contrast matrix as in Error-contrast matrix for a full-rank fixed design, independently of . By A Gaussian error contrast has the induced multivariate-normal law, the contrast vector has law and its law does not depend on the fixed-effect parameter . The local result The REML error-contrast covariance is positive definite shows that this covariance is positive definite, and A positive-definite multivariate normal law has its Gaussian density gives its Gaussian density. The restricted likelihood for this fixed contrast basis is This item defines the likelihood for a fixed, parameter-independent choice of contrast coordinates; it makes no claim about likelihood comparisons across different fixed-effect designs.
Remarks
The local column-basis convention is with columns spanning , so is defined. The restriction supplies a nonzero contrast space; when , this definition makes no variance-likelihood claim.

51 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
