How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Weak linear 2-category
Definition
Fix a field . A weak linear 2-category consists of a class of objects and, for each ordered pair , a -linear category . Its objects are called 1-morphisms and its morphisms are called 2-morphisms. Each triple has a -bilinear composition functor and each has an identity 1-morphism . A -linear category here means that every hom set is a -vector space and composition is bilinear.
For composable , , and , there is a natural invertible 2-morphism For each there are natural invertible unit 2-morphisms The associators satisfy the pentagon equation on every fourfold composite; the two unitors and associator satisfy the triangle equation on every pair of composable 1-morphisms. These equations are equalities of 2-morphisms between the indicated parallel 1-morphisms. Vertical composition is composition in each hom category. Horizontal composition is the displayed functor, so functoriality gives the interchange equation between horizontal and vertical composition.
When the associators and unitors are identities, this is a strict 2-category in the sense of Strict 2-category. No strictness is imposed in the weak definition.
Remarks
The source and target of every 2-morphism lie in one hom category. Associators change only the parentheses of a composable string; they do not change its endpoints. No monoidal product on the objects is part of this definition.

8 results within two dependency steps of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
