How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The complex projective plane has nonzero w2 and no Spin structure
Statement
Assume full AC.
Let generate , where is the tautological complex line. Then Consequently the oriented tangent bundle of has no Spin lift.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: Full AC, the complex orientation on and its tautological line.
The Euler sequence computation gives (The tangent bundle of complex projective space and its Pontryagin classes).
, with a generator of (Integral cohomology ring of complex projective space).
For a complex bundle, (Mod-two reduction of Chern classes).
The Schubert symbol formula gives one cell in each dimension for (Schubert cells in real and complex Grassmannians, Schubert cells give the stable Grassmannian CW structure). Cellular homology computes singular homology, and the cohomological universal-coefficient sequence is natural (Cellular homology computes singular homology, The universal coefficient theorem for cohomology over a PID, Singular cohomology with coefficients).
An oriented real bundle admits a Spin lift exactly when its vanishes (Spin structures exist exactly when w2 vanishes and then form an H1 torsor).
Full AC is inherited through the characteristic-class and Spin-lift suppliers (The Axiom of Choice).
Proof
Given: and the stated generator .
By [F1] with , . The coefficient reduction is a ring homomorphism, so because .
The CW structure in [F4] has cellular chains , , and , with all other groups zero. Every cellular boundary is zero because its target is zero, so cellular and singular homology give and . By UCT with integral coefficients, evaluation identifies with ; since is an integral cohomology generator by [F2], it evaluates as or on a homology generator. UCT with coefficients identifies with , and naturality of coefficient reduction makes evaluate as . Hence .
Applying [F3] to the complex tangent bundle and using steps 1.1–1.2 gives . The manifold is complex-oriented, hence its tangent bundle is oriented; [F5] therefore implies that it admits no Spin lift. The coefficient group has characteristic two and no sign convention changes the nonzero class.
