How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Spin structures exist exactly when w2 vanishes and then form an H1 torsor
Statement
Assume the full Axiom of Choice. Let be an oriented Euclidean smooth real vector bundle of rank over a Hausdorff second-countable smooth manifold. Then admits a Spin lift of Spin lifts of oriented orthonormal frame bundles if and only if . When nonempty, isomorphism classes of lifts form a torsor under : twisting a lift by a principal -bundle gives a free and transitive action. No distinguished lift is asserted. Rank zero is excluded.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: Full AC; an oriented Euclidean rank- bundle with ; and the associated oriented orthonormal frame bundle.
is a central two-sheeted cover with kernel (Pin and full-even Spin are topological double covers, Real Clifford group, Pin, and the two Spin subgroups).
For , this Euclidean Spin group is connected and simply connected and its map to is the universal cover (Euclidean Spin is the universal cover of SO(n) for n at least three). Its proof uses AC through the Hurewicz-fibration interface recorded in that item.
The Stiefel–Whitney classes are natural, satisfy the Whitney product formula, and vanish above rank (Naturality of Stiefel–Whitney classes, Whitney sum formula for Stiefel–Whitney classes, Stiefel–Whitney classes from the projective-bundle relation).
For a complex bundle regarded as real, and odd Stiefel–Whitney classes vanish (Mod-two reduction of Chern classes). The tautological complex line on has first Chern class a generator of (Cohomology ring of infinite complex projective space, The first Chern class classifies complex line bundles).
The oriented Grassmannian model classifies numerable oriented vector bundles (Oriented real vector bundles are classified by BSO, Oriented Grassmannians and the tautological oriented bundle); with a supplied metric, orientation corresponds to the reduction (Orientation is equivalent to an SO(n)-reduction). Given an orientation-preserving bundle isomorphism and two metrics on its target, write for the positive -self-adjoint bundle endomorphism . The smooth positive square root sends -orthonormal frames to -orthonormal frames and has positive determinant, so the isomorphism induces an isomorphism of the corresponding frame bundles. The model has the CW weak topology from its lifted Schubert cells (Oriented Grassmannians have two lifted Schubert cells). Its tautological oriented frame bundle is the stable Stiefel principal -bundle, with contractible total space (Stiefel spaces, Grassmannians, and tautological bundles, Stable Stiefel space is contractible). For any lifting problem over a compact disk cylinder, the pullback bundle is numerable: the compact Hausdorff cylinder is paracompact (Every compact space is paracompact) and its local trivializing cover has a subordinate partition of unity (Under choice and dependent choice, every open cover of a paracompact Hausdorff space admits a locally finite subordinate partition of unity); hence the pullback satisfies the Hurewicz lifting theorem for numerable bundles (Numerable fiber bundles are hurewicz fibrations). The homotopy long exact sequence, first Hurewicz theorem, and cohomological universal coefficient theorem over a PID are supplied by Long exact sequence of homotopy groups of a fibration, Absolute Hurewicz theorem at the first nonzero degree, and The universal coefficient theorem for cohomology over a PID.
Every point has a strongly geodesically convex neighborhood inside any prescribed frame-trivializing open set, and nonempty finite intersections remain strongly geodesically convex (Existence of geodesically convex neighborhoods). The frame bundle's local trivializations form an open cover by definition (Oriented real bundles and oriented frame bundles).
For a cover by strongly geodesically convex open sets, the nerve realizes the homotopy type of ; consequently the nerve's simplicial cohomology is singular cohomology (A geodesically convex cover has the homotopy type of its nerve).
The chosen convex cover admits a locally finite smooth partition of unity subordinate to it; because it refines the frame-trivializing cover, this partition numerates (Smooth partitions of unity exist on manifolds).
The base is paracompact by the topological-manifold theorem. It is locally compact Hausdorff by its manifold charts. If is not closed, choose and a compact neighborhood of . Every relative neighborhood of in meets , so ; hence is not -closed and is compactly generated. A compact Hausdorff test image is compact and therefore closed in , so is weak Hausdorff as well. Thus it is CGWH under the repository convention (Topological manifolds are metrizable and paracompact, Compactly generated conventions for based homotopy).
A based map from a path-connected locally path-connected space lifts through a covering when its fundamental-group image lies in that of the covering space (Lifting criterion for maps from path-connected locally path-connected spaces).
Cellular homology of a CW complex agrees naturally with singular homology; applying the natural cohomological universal coefficient sequence over identifies cellular and singular cohomology with coefficients (Cellular homology computes singular homology, The universal coefficient theorem for cohomology over a PID).
A map of CW complexes is homotopic to a cellular map (Cellular approximation for maps of CW pairs).
Full AC is used through [F2], [F4], [F5], and [F8] to obtain the lifting, classifying/CW, and characteristic-class interfaces; the finite sign-cocycle and torsor calculations below use no further choice principle (The Axiom of Choice).
Proof
Given: The data in the Statement and full AC. Let be the set of pairs where is a frame-trivializing open set and . For every such pair choose, using full AC, a strongly geodesically convex open set with , as supplied by [F6]. This family covers because every point belongs to a frame-trivializing open set and its chosen convex neighborhood. It is subordinate to the trivializing cover, and all its nonempty finite intersections are contractible by [F6]. Well-order the resulting index set using full AC and denote the ordered cover by . Write its transition functions as , with .
Each nonempty finite intersection of the good cover is contractible by [F6], hence path-connected and locally path-connected. For every nonempty double intersection choose a basepoint and a point over its transition value under the cover [F1]. Since the intersection is simply connected, [F10] lifts to a continuous . Full AC supplies these simultaneous choices. Choose and . Since , the triple product is a locally constant central sign .
Associativity and centrality give on every nonempty quadruple intersection: substitute the four chosen lifts, cancel each shared lift with its inverse, and commute only the resulting central signs. Thus is a degree-two cocycle on the cover nerve. If the lifts are changed by signs , the triple product changes by the Čech coboundary ; hence its cohomology class is independent of these choices. Under pullback, transitions and chosen lifts compose with the base map, so the sign cocycle pulls back; on a common refinement, restriction gives the simplicial cochain pullback. By [F7], the nerve comparison is natural, so is a well-defined element of , natural under pullback and refinement.
If , choose signs with and replace by , using additive notation for the signs. The new triple products are , so these transitions glue a principal Spin bundle and the maps glue its equivariant map to . Conversely, transitions of any Spin lift have triple product , so relative to the chosen lifts their signs make a coboundary. Thus a lift exists exactly when .
For , [F5] gives the CW model and its contractible stable Stiefel total space. Its tautological frame map is locally trivial by the graph charts, and is a Serre fibration: pullbacks over the compact parameter spaces are numerable by [F5], hence Hurewicz fibrations. The long exact sequence, contractibility of the total space, connectedness of , and [F2] give and . The base is path-connected because the stable Stiefel space is nonempty, contractible, and maps onto it. Hurewicz and UCT [F5] give . We construct its universal lifting obstruction on cells. The universal frame bundle is trivial over the 1-skeleton: it is trivial over each edge by the classifying property in [F5], and edge sections can be adjusted at their endpoints using path-connectedness of . Choose such a frame section on the 1-skeleton. For each oriented 2-cell, choose a frame over its characteristic disk and compare its boundary with the chosen 1-skeleton section; the comparison is a loop in . Assign the cell value if this loop lifts to a closed loop in Spin and otherwise. Changing the disk frame multiplies the comparison by a loop that extends over the disk, so the value is unchanged. To check independence of the 1-skeleton section, compare two such sections by a map into , choose a lift at every vertex, and lift its path along each oriented edge from the chosen initial lift. Record whether each terminal lift agrees with the chosen lift at the terminal vertex. On the boundary of each 2-cell, these edge signs change its obstruction value by their cellular incidence sum, exactly the coboundary of this 1-cochain. An isomorphism of principal -bundles transports frame sections and comparison loops, so it preserves this obstruction class. For a 3-cell, the pulled-back frame bundle on its characteristic disk is trivial and has a Spin lift; hence its boundary obstruction on the attaching 2-sphere is zero. The cellular incidence formula identifies that value with the coboundary of the 2-cochain on the 3-cell. Thus the values form a cocycle and determine a choice-independent class , which [F11] identifies with singular . Pulling back the universal frame bundle pulls back this cellwise obstruction class: on each 2-cell, the comparison loop is the pullback of the corresponding boundary-frame comparison, and the cellular incidence maps give the induced cohomology pullback. Let be the good-cover homotopy equivalence and let classify . Replace by a cellular map using [F12]; its pulled-back frame bundle is classified by the nerve transition cocycle. On each 2-simplex, the comparison loop is the triple product of transition lifts in step 1.1, so its cell value is . Hence the nerve comparison [F7] identifies with .
If a lift exists, any other lifted cocycle differs from it by a sign-valued degree-one cochain . Both are cocycles, so . An isomorphism over the fixed bundle is given locally by signs ; it changes the difference cocycle by . Therefore isomorphism classes of lifts are a free transitive -set. The action is twisting by the associated principal -bundle; freeness follows because a twisting cocycle that is a coboundary is removed by that local sign isomorphism, and transitivity follows from the cocycle difference.
For , the clutching loop that rotates an oriented two-plane through and is the identity on its orthogonal complement represents the generator of , hence corresponds under the fibration boundary isomorphism in step 3.2 to a generator of . Its Spin lift is , which starts at and ends at , so the universal obstruction evaluates to . The associated oriented plane bundle over is the underlying real Hopf line, whose is a generator; [F4] makes its the nonzero reduction. Adding a trivial -plane preserves by [F3]. Hence and are both the unique nonzero element of computed in step 3.2, and are equal.
For , and direct Clifford multiplication gives with . Thus , , and the degree-one clutching loop again fails to lift closed. Its universal oriented plane is the realification of the Hopf line; [F4] gives , which evaluates to on that generator. The two classes are again equal. For , the oriented orthonormal frame bundle has structure group and by rank; its lifts are principal bundles, whose sign transitions modulo sign-valued vertex changes are exactly .
By [F8], is numerable; [F9] verifies the paracompact Hausdorff CGWH base hypotheses of the oriented-bundle classifier in [F5], which supplies an oriented bundle isomorphism from to the pullback of the tautological bundle. The positive square-root metric correction in [F5] identifies their frame bundles, giving a classifying map for the actual . Naturality of the local lifting obstruction and of , together with the nerve comparison [F7], pulls the universal equality back to . Step 3.1 proves existence iff this class vanishes, and step 4.1 proves the torsor statement. The empty-base case has one empty lift and ; rank zero lies outside this item's stated rank range; no claim that the repo's Spin(0) convention lacks a sign-bundle torsor is made. The only nonempty choices are the local lifts in step 1.1 and the cochain primitive in step 3.1, both covered by full AC [A1].
