How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

A training Gram matrix does not determine a test prediction

Example

On the two-point set {x,z}, put ϕ0(x)=e1, ϕ0(z)=e2, ϕ1(x)=e1, and ϕ1(z)=(1/2,3/2)T, where e1,e2 are the standard basis vectors of R2. For j∈{0,1}, define kj(s,t)=ϕj(s)Tϕj(t) and let Hj={fv:v∈R2}, where fv(t)=vTϕj(t) and ⟨fv,fw⟩Hj=vTw. Each feature pair is linearly independent, so this defines a real Hilbert space of functions; its kernel sections are kj(⋅,s)=fϕj(s) and reproduce evaluation. Thus Hj is an actual real RKHS for kj, and the corresponding matrices in the order (x,z) are G0=(1001) and G1=(11/21/21). With the single training point x, response y=1, and shift τ>0, both training Gram matrices are [1] and both coefficient vectors equal 1/(1+τ). The two exact test predictions kj(z,x)aj are 0 and 1/(2(1+τ)), respectively.

For a rank-one Nyström approximation of G0, use the sketch S=(1,1/10)T. The Nyström matrix is

K~=G0S(STG0S)†STG0=(100/10110/10110/1011/101).

With training point x, response 1, and τ=1, the exact test prediction for G0 is 0, whereas the Nyström coefficient is a~=(100/101+1)−1=101/201 and its test prediction is K~zxa~=10/201. The training Gram error is 1/101, and the training fitted-value error is ∣1/2−100/201∣=1/402, while the test-prediction error is 10/201.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The two-point set, feature vectors, RKHS constructions, Gram matrices, training points, responses, shifts, and rank-one Nyström sketch in the Example.

[A1]

The feature maps, finite RKHSs, matrices G0,G1, training input x, test input z, responses, shifts, and sketch are exactly those stated in the Example.

[F1]

Positive semidefinite kernels and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces: a real kernel is positive semidefinite when it is symmetric and every finite Gram quadratic form is nonnegative; an RKHS has reproducing kernel sections.

[F2]

Regularized kernel prediction system: the coefficient for a training Gram matrix K is (K+τI)−1y.

[F3]

The positive-semidefinite Nyström approximation: for a PSD matrix K and a finite sketch S, the Nyström matrix is KS(STKS)†STK.

[F4]

The kernel ridge system uniquely minimizes the mean-square RKHS objective: for a real RKHS kernel, training list length n, and λ>0, the coefficient with τ=nλ gives the unique minimizer of the corresponding mean-square RKHS objective.

Verification

Given: The matrices and training setup in [A1].

1.1givenA1F1algebra

For each j, the feature vectors ϕj(x),ϕj(z) are linearly independent. Hence v↦fv is injective, the stated inner product makes Hj a complete two-dimensional real inner-product space, and kj(⋅,s)=fϕj(s) satisfies ⟨fv,kj(⋅,s)⟩Hj=vTϕj(s)=fv(s). For any finite list (ti) in {x,z} and real coefficients (ci), ∑i,jcicjkj(ti,tj)=∥∑iciϕj(ti)∥22≥0. Thus each kj is a positive-semidefinite kernel with the displayed Gram matrix and an explicitly specified real RKHS.

2.1givenA1F2F4step 1.1algebra

For the training list consisting of x, both training Gram matrices equal [1]. By [F2], both shifted systems give coefficient 1/(1+τ) and training fitted value 1/(1+τ). The list length is n=1, so setting λ=τ>0 gives τ=nλ; the actual RKHSs established in step 1.1 let [F4] identify these coefficients with the unique kernel-ridge minimizers. The exact test predictions are k0(z,x)/(1+τ)=0 and k1(z,x)/(1+τ)=1/(2(1+τ)).

Since G0S=(1,1/10)T and STG0S=101/100, [F3] gives the displayed rank-one matrix K~. Its training entry is 100/101, so [F2] gives a~=(100/101+1)−1=101/201 at τ=1. The approximate test prediction is (10/101)(101/201)=10/201; the exact prediction under G0 is zero. The training fitted-value difference is ∣1/2−(100/101)(101/201)∣=∣1/2−100/201∣=1/402, while the test-prediction difference is 10/201.
