How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Exact-sequence counts equal endpoint automorphism counts times subobject counts
Statement
Let be a small finitary abelian category and let . Let be the number of endpoint-labelled short exact sequences , and let . Then where counts subobjects with quotient isomorphic to as in The untwisted Hall algebra of a finitary abelian category.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A finitary abelian category and objects .
counts subobject classes represented by monomorphisms whose cokernel is isomorphic to (The untwisted Hall algebra of a finitary abelian category).
Hom sets are finite, and a short exact sequence has a monomorphism and epimorphism with the indicated kernel and cokernel (Small finitary abelian categories for Hall multiplication, Exact sequence and short exact sequence in an abelian category).
Proof
Fix a subobject class counted by [F1], represented by . Its quotient is a quotient object isomorphic to . The number of isomorphisms is , and the number of isomorphisms is . Each pair of isomorphisms determines exactly one endpoint-labelled short exact sequence with this subobject; every such sequence arises from that pair.
Distinct subobject classes give disjoint sets of labelled sequences, because the image of the first map recovers the subobject class. Therefore each counted subobject contributes exactly sequences, and summing over the classes proves the formula.
The total set of labelled sequences is a subset of and hence finite by [F2]. The count is therefore a well-defined natural number.

An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
