How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
FI-modules over a Noetherian -algebra form a Noetherian category
Statement
Let be a commutative Noetherian ring containing (Left and right Noetherian rings, Restriction of scalars and extension of scalars along a ring homomorphism ), and let be a finitely generated FI-module over (Span, finite generation and generation degree of an FI-module, The category FI and FI-modules over a commutative ring). Then every sub-FI-module is again finitely generated: the category of FI-modules over is Noetherian, in the sense that every subobject of a finitely generated object is finitely generated. The hypothesis that contains is used only through the exactness of the functors and through restriction of scalars to (The coinvariant functors and the transition maps ). No choice principle is used.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A commutative Noetherian ring containing ; a finitely generated FI-module over , generated in degree for some , and a sub-FI-module (Span, finite generation and generation degree of an FI-module, The category FI and FI-modules over a commutative ring); the graded -modules and with their transition maps , where is the polynomial ring in one variable over (The coinvariant functors and the transition maps , The polynomial ring over a commutative ring as finitely supported coefficient sequences with convolution).
and the transition map comes from an injection fixing ; is a functor to graded -modules and is exact when contains , so for the map is injective and a short exact sequence of FI-modules stays exact after (The coinvariant functors and the transition maps ).
If is generated in degree , then the evaluation map is surjective, and if is finitely generated then is a finitely generated -module for every finite set ; generation in degree passes to quotients (Generation in bounded degree presents an FI-module as a quotient of free FI-modules, The free FI-module generated by an -module, Span, finite generation and generation degree of an FI-module).
If is generated in degree , then , i.e. is surjective for all and all ; and over a field of characteristic , generation in degree implies (Bounded generation degree bounds surjectivity degree and weight, Free FI-modules have computable stability degree and weight).
If an FI-module over a characteristic-zero field has , then, for every , every subquotient of satisfies (Coinvariants detect vanishing of subquotients of bounded weight, and padded irreducibles stabilise); weight is monotone under subquotients (Weight of an FI-module over a field of characteristic zero).
is a Noetherian commutative ring (Hilbert basis theorem: if is Noetherian then is Noetherian, The polynomial ring over a commutative ring as finitely supported coefficient sequences with convolution), and every finitely generated module over a Noetherian ring is Noetherian, so each of its submodules is finitely generated (Finitely generated modules over a left Noetherian ring are Noetherian, Noetherian modules: every submodule is finitely generated, Left and right Noetherian rings).
Restriction of scalars along the unital homomorphism turns each -module into a -vector space by the same abelian group, and turns each FI-module over into an FI-module over with the same underlying sets and maps (Restriction of scalars and extension of scalars along a ring homomorphism ); the coinvariants of over equal the coinvariants of over as -vector spaces, because a -multiple is itself such a relation, so the -span of the set equals its -span (The coinvariant functors and the transition maps ).
Proof
By [F2] the -module is finitely generated for every , and since is Noetherian and , each is a finitely generated -module as well.
The graded -module is finitely generated: by [F3] the map is surjective for every , so every element of lies in the -submodule generated by ; each with is a quotient of , hence a finitely generated -module by step 1.1, so it is generated by finitely many elements.
Since is a -submodule of the finitely generated module over the Noetherian ring , it is a finitely generated -module; writing a finite generating set as finite sums of homogeneous components, the homogeneous components of the generators form a finite generating set consisting of elements with .
For each choose a lift of (possible because is a quotient of ), and for each choose a finite generating set of the -module , which is possible by step 1.1; let be the sub-FI-module generated by all these elements. Then : the inclusion gives , while each is the image of , so contains a generating set of . By exactness [F1], applied to , we get .
Let . Restricting scalars to gives an FI-module over , a subquotient of by construction. The evaluation surjection remains a surjection of -vector spaces after restriction, and the restriction of the free -FI-module is the free -FI-module on , because both are the same direct sum of the same coefficient spaces with the same transition maps; hence is generated in degree over by [F2]. Therefore by [F3] applied over the characteristic-zero field , and because weight is monotone under subquotients [F4].
By [F6] the coinvariants of are the restriction of the coinvariants of , so by step 4.1. Hence for every the coinvariants vanish, and step 5.1 with [F4] gives , which forces ; for the module vanishes by the choice of generators of in step 4.1. Thus , that is is generated by the finite set of elements chosen in step 4.1, so is finitely generated.
Steps 1.1–6.1 prove that every sub-FI-module of a finitely generated FI-module over a commutative Noetherian ring containing is finitely generated, so the category of FI-modules over is Noetherian. All generating sets and lifts chosen are finite, the Hilbert basis theorem enters only through its choice-free finite-generation form [F5], and no map or basis of an infinite-dimensional rational space is used.
