How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Finite generation is equivalent to uniform representation stability
Statement
Let be a field of characteristic and let be an FI-module over with finite-dimensional values (The category FI and FI-modules over a commutative ring). Then is finitely generated if and only if the consistent sequence determined by is uniformly representation stable (Uniform representation stability for consistent sequences of -modules, Span, finite generation and generation degree of an FI-module). No choice principle is used.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A characteristic-zero field , an FI-module over with finite-dimensional values, and the consistent sequence with induced by the standard inclusion (Uniform representation stability for consistent sequences of -modules).
A consistent sequence is uniformly representation stable with stable range when is injective for all , the -span of is for all , and all multiplicities are independent of for ; the sequence is uniformly representation stable when this holds for some (Uniform representation stability for consistent sequences of -modules).
is the smallest sub-FI-module containing all values of in degrees , its value at being the -span of the elements with , and an injection; is generated in degree when this span is , equivalently when there is a surjection with all , and finitely generated modules admit such a surjection with finite ; the free module is generated in degree by its value at (Span, finite generation and generation degree of an FI-module, Generation in bounded degree presents an FI-module as a quotient of free FI-modules, The free FI-module generated by an -module).
Generation in degree implies , and over characteristic zero it implies ; weight is inherited by subquotients, and surjectivity degree is inherited by quotients through the quotient bound for (Bounded generation degree bounds surjectivity degree and weight, Injectivity, surjectivity and stability degree).
For every FB-module the free FI-module has ; in particular for every (Free FI-modules have computable stability degree and weight).
Every sub-FI-module of a finitely generated FI-module over a commutative Noetherian ring containing is finitely generated (FI-modules over a Noetherian -algebra form a Noetherian category).
is a functor to graded -modules, exact over fields of characteristic , and its transition map is natural; preserves finite direct sums (The coinvariant functors and the transition maps ).
is the least such that is injective for all and all ; is the analogous bound with surjectivity; (Injectivity, surjectivity and stability degree).
If an FI-module over a characteristic-zero field has finite-dimensional values, finite weight and finite stability degree , then its consistent sequence is uniformly representation stable with stable range (Weight and stability degree give a uniform representation-stability range).
Proof
Assume that is finitely generated, say generated in degree . By [F3] , and by [F2] there is a finite surjection ; let be its kernel. The module is finitely generated (each is generated in degree by [F2]), so is finitely generated by [F5] applied over the field ; say is generated in degree . These data will bound the injectivity degree of below.
Conversely, assume that is uniformly representation stable with range . For condition (II) says that the -span of is all of , and every injection equals for the standard inclusion and some , so is spanned by the images over all injections . The values in degrees lie in by [F2], and if for some , then every lies in because the span is a sub-FI-module; the displayed spanning property of condition (II) then gives . By induction for every , hence . Each with is finite-dimensional, hence generated by finitely many elements; let be the finite union of these finitely many finite generating sets, so that for every . For a finite set with and a bijection one has , so and therefore ; thus is finitely generated.
Returning to : for every , the exactness of over the characteristic-zero field gives an exact sequence by [F6]. The module is a finite direct sum of copies of the free modules , each of injectivity degree by [F4], so is injective for all by [F6] and [F7]; and is surjective for by [F3]. Hence is injective for : a lift of with has in the image of , so for some , and injectivity on gives , whence . Therefore by [F7], and since .
Under the assumption of step 1.1 the weight is finite, indeed by [F3] over the characteristic-zero field , and by step 2.1. By [F8] the sequence is uniformly representation stable, with stable range .
Steps 1.1, 2.1 and 3.1 prove that finite generation implies uniform representation stability (through finiteness of stability degree and weight and the preceding proposition), and step 1.2 proves the converse; hence for an FI-module with finite-dimensional values over a characteristic-zero field the two properties are equivalent.
