How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Cartesian Yee symbol, numerical dispersion, and grid CFL bound
Statement
Consider a homogeneous isotropic periodic Yee grid with , wave speed , spacings , and cells. Its allowed wave angles are . On a mode with wave vector , the transverse curl-curl eigenvalue is and the lossless Yee leapfrog dispersion relation is The exact finite-grid strict condition is , as in Strict spectral CFL positivity and Yee modified energy. The rectangular sufficient bound is it is exact when every is even. For a cubic grid this bound is . Odd cell counts may have a smaller finite-grid maximum, so the finite-grid eigenvalue is the exact criterion.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A homogeneous isotropic periodic Cartesian Yee grid and a lossless, source-free leapfrog update.
Edge cochains are oriented line integrals, face cochains are oriented fluxes, and the homogeneous Cartesian Hodge weights are the stated diagonal dual-volume weights. (Oriented Maxwell cochains, masses, and the Yee grid)
The positive-energy criterion is the strict generalized spectral condition . (Strict spectral CFL positivity and Yee modified energy)
The Yee rows use the half-step magnetic update and integer-step electric update. (Lossless or midpoint-conductive Yee leapfrog update)
Proof
On a periodic Fourier mode, a forward edge difference in direction has multiplier . The half-cell phase in the edge and face cochain locations is removed by a unitary diagonal change of Fourier basis, so the scaled directional symbol is with . The Cartesian curl symbol is therefore .
The cross-product matrix is real skew-symmetric. The identity follows by expanding the vector triple product. Thus the curl-curl symbol is zero on the longitudinal vector and equals on its two-dimensional orthogonal complement. The Hodge weights in [F1] scale this eigenvalue by , giving the stated .
For a transverse mode with this eigenvalue, subtracting the electric row in [F3] at consecutive time indices and using its magnetic row gives . Substitution of yields , which is the displayed dispersion relation.
Since , . When every is even, the allowed tuple attains equality; otherwise the exact maximum is the maximum over the finite allowed tuples. Applying [F2] gives the rectangular strict bound and its cubic specialization, while preserving the finite-grid endpoint distinction.
