How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Strict spectral CFL positivity and Yee modified energy
Statement
Set . If the retained electric cochain space is zero-dimensional, define ; otherwise set For a lossless, source-free update from Lossless or midpoint-conductive Yee leapfrog update, define Then is independent of , and Consequently, the actual strict spectral condition makes this modified energy positive on admissible staggered states and controls the electric field and the centered magnetic field. When , at equality the energy loses coercivity and a maximal mode has a repeated root ; above equality a mode grows exponentially. If , the strict condition is automatic for every and neither endpoint case occurs.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: , a finite Yee complex, symmetric positive definite , no source, and .
The mass matrices are symmetric positive definite, and is the curl-curl matrix. (Oriented Maxwell cochains, masses, and the Yee grid)
The lossless rows are and . (Lossless or midpoint-conductive Yee leapfrog update)
Proof
If , the electric cochain is necessarily zero and is the zero map from the zero space. The Faraday row in [F2] makes at every step, while the electric row is an equality in the zero space. Thus is constant and . With the stated convention , this proves conservation, the lower bound, and positivity on the remaining magnetic state for every ; there is no positive-eigenvalue endpoint case. For the rest of the proof assume . The quotient defining is continuous on the compact set , so the maximum exists and is finite. Also , hence . From the first row of [F2], and . Expanding their inner product gives
Using [F2], the electric-energy increment is The magnetic cross-energy increment is by applying the Faraday row at times and . The two increments cancel, proving conservation.
By the definition of , . Substitution into step 1.1 gives the stated lower bound. When , its electric coefficient is positive. If an admissible staggered state has zero energy, the bound forces and ; the Faraday row in [F2] then gives , so . Thus the energy is positive definite on update states.
Subtract the electric row in [F2] at indices and , then use the magnetic row to replace ; this gives . If , a maximizing vector satisfies by the constrained Rayleigh-quotient maximum. Thus obeys , whose characteristic polynomial is . Hence is a solution and grows linearly when . It is compatible with the full first-order rows by setting : the Ampere row follows from , and the Faraday row follows from the scalar recurrence. For , the same recurrence has real reciprocal roots, one with modulus greater than one. This proves the endpoint caveat and instability above it.
