How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

An external-source singularity reached in finite time: the inverse-square external model has a motion whose maximal interval is bounded above

Physical scope

A refutation, inside the model, of the claim that every motion of the inverse-square external-potential model exists for all real times: for one label with inertial mass [m]=μ in the external potential U(x)=−k/∣x∣, where [k]=μℓ3τ−2, on the external-source-excluded domain, an explicit radial motion with the stated initial data solves the model on (−∞,T) and has no extension past the finite time T, at which the position reaches the excluded center and the speed is unbounded. The item refutes only the all-time-existence claim for this model, illustrates the escape alternative of the breakdown criterion, and asserts no motion of any physical body, no measurement and no empirical claim.

Statement refuted

Let m>0 and k>0 have dimensions [m]=μ and [k]=μℓ3τ−2, respectively (Dimensions and SI unit conventions of the non-relativistic classical mechanics framework). Consider the force model of Adopted force model: force maps, the equation of motion, additive composition of force contributions and frame covariance for one label with time window I0=R, external-source-excluded configuration domain Q=R3∖{0} (Configuration domain of N labeled particles: open admissible sets, regular holonomic constraints and the mass operator clause (a)), mass m, and the external potential

U(x)=−k∣x∣,U:Q→R,

of the potential branch of Restricted interaction models: pair decompositions, antisymmetry and centrality options, potential forces and the gravitational branch clause (iii), so that the force map is F(x)=−∇U(x)=−k x/∣x∣3 and the equation of motion is

m x¨(t)=−k x(t)∣x(t)∣3(t∈R, x(t)≠0).

For this single-label model the distinct-label collision set Δ of Configuration domain of N labeled particles: open admissible sets, regular holonomic constraints and the mass operator clause (a) is empty; the excluded point is the prescribed external-source singularity, not a collision of model labels.

Then every motion of this model is defined for all real times; equivalently, the maximal interval of every motion is all of R.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The model above with its parameters m,k>0, the external-source-excluded domain Q=R3∖{0}, and the initial datum of step 1.2 below.

[L1]

The model's motions are the C2 curves x:J→Q with mx¨(t)=F(x(t)) for t∈J⊆R (The associated first-order system, motions, maximal motions and the Newtonian flow of a force model clauses (a)-(c)); the maximal motion through a datum exists, is unique, and every motion with that datum is its restriction (Local existence and uniqueness for the Newtonian initial-value problem, with the quantitative Picard-Lindelöf cylinder clauses 1, 2, 4). The regularity of this force map on Q (continuity and local Lipschitz property on every source-excluding annulus) is the content of Standing regularity of the page's force models checked: uniform field, linear drag and the inverse-square model on its singularity-excluded domain.

Integer-power differentiation and calculus rules: (sn)′=nsn−1 for integers n≥1 (For a natural n≥1 the function x↦xn is differentiable everywhere with derivative ι(n) x n−1; for n=0 it is the constant 1, with derivative 0; for a natural n≥1 the function x↦x−n is differentiable at every x≠0 with derivative −ι(n) x−n−1; consequently every polynomial function is differentiable at every real, with the derivative computed term by term); sums, products and quotients with nonzero denominator differentiate by the algebra of derivatives, and differentiable compositions obey the chain rule (Sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients: (f+g)′(c)=f′(c)+g′(c), (αf)′(c)=αf′(c), (fg)′(c)=f′(c)g(c)+f(c)g′(c), and (f/g)′(c)=(f′(c)g(c)−f(c)g′(c))/g(c)2 when g(c)≠0, The chain rule, in one line from Carathéodory: if g is differentiable at c and f is differentiable at g(c), then f∘g is differentiable at c with (f∘g)′(c)=f′(g(c)) g′(c)). The derivative is the limit of its difference quotient (The derivative f′(c)=lim⁡x→cf(x)−f(c)x−c of f:A→R at a point c∈A that is a limit point of A, and differentiability on a set).

The Euclidean norm satisfies the triangle inequality and absolute homogeneity (Cauchy-Schwarz ∣⟨x,y⟩∣≤∥x∥2∥y∥2 with its equality case, the triangle inequality for ∥⋅∥2, the parallelogram law and polarisation, The Euclidean inner product ⟨x,y⟩=∑k<nxkyk on Rn) and its reverse triangle inequality is ∣∣x∣−∣y∣∣≤∣x−y∣ (The reverse triangle inequality in a normed space); a standard coordinate vector ei has norm 1, so ∣hei∣=∣h∣; in particular ∣r(t)e1∣=∣r(t)∣ for the unit vector e1.

[L4]

In the present autonomous model on I0=R, if a maximal motion has finite right endpoint b and its state stays in a compact subset of the open state domain near b, it extends past b (Maximal Newtonian motions and the compact-continuation criterion: finite-time breakdown requires escape from every compact subset of the time-state domain clause 3); in particular, a motion that reaches a configuration excluded from Q at a finite time cannot be extended beyond it, because a motion's values must lie in Q at every time of its interval (The associated first-order system, motions, maximal motions and the Newtonian flow of a force model clause (c)).

Units (Dimensions and SI unit conventions of the non-relativistic classical mechanics framework): [m]=μ, [k]=μℓ3τ−2, [κ]=ℓ3τ−2, [r0]=ℓ, [T]=τ and [v0]=ℓτ−1; the potential has dimension μℓ2τ−2 and the force has dimension μℓτ−2.

[L6]

For every a≥0 and integer n≥1 there is a unique nonnegative n-th root of a, and the root is positive when a>0 (Existence and uniqueness of n-th roots: a unique a1/n≥0 with (a1/n)n=a).

Force from the potential: fix x≠0 and a coordinate index i∈{1,2,3}, and let ei be the corresponding standard coordinate vector. For ∣h∣<∣x∣/2, [L3] gives ∣x+hei∣≥∣x∣−∣h∣>0, so the difference quotient is defined; also ∣x+hei∣→∣x∣>0. Rationalizing the difference of squares gives ∣x+hei∣−∣x∣h=2xi+h∣x+hei∣+∣x∣→xi∣x∣. Therefore ∂iU(x)=lim⁡h→0−k/∣x+hei∣+k/∣x∣h=lim⁡h→0k(∣x+hei∣−∣x∣)h∣x+hei∣∣x∣=kxi∣x∣3. By the definition of the Euclidean gradient in Restricted interaction models: pair decompositions, antisymmetry and centrality options, potential forces and the gravitational branch clause (iii), −∇U(x)=−k x/∣x∣3; this is the model's force map, continuous and locally Lipschitz on Q by [L1] and Standing regularity of the page's force models checked: uniform field, linear drag and the inverse-square model on its singularity-excluded domain. Its dimension is [k]/[x]2=μℓτ−2, as required by [L5].

Set κ:=k/m>0, let r0>0 have dimension ℓ, and define T:=2 r03/23κ,v0:=−2κr0. Then [T]=τ and [v0]=ℓτ−1 by [L5], and the definitions give T2=2r03/(9κ) and 2r0/(3T)=2κ/r0=−v0. Take the initial datum x(0)=r0e1, x˙(0)=v0e1.

For t<T put s(t):=1−t/T>0, let q(t) be the unique positive cube root of s(t)2, and set r(t):=r0q(t) and x(t):=r(t)e1. This defines q by [L6]. The cube-root map is continuous on [0,∞): for nonnegative a,b, if α3=a and β3=b, then ∣α−β∣3≤∣a−b∣, since α2+αβ+β2≥(α−β)2; applying this to a=s(t+h)2 and b=s(t)2 gives q(t+h)→q(t). For h→0 with t+h<T, rationalizing and using s(t+h)=s(t)−h/T gives q(t+h)−q(t)h=(s(t+h)2−s(t)2)/hq(t+h)2+q(t+h)q(t)+q(t)2⟶−2s(t)3Tq(t)2, so q′(t)=−2s(t)/(3Tq(t)2). Differentiating this identity by [L2] and using s′=−1/T and q3=s2 gives q′′(t)=−2/(9T2q(t)2). Thus x is C2 on (−∞,T) and r˙(t)=−2r0s(t)3Tq(t)2,r¨(t)=−2r09T2q(t)2. Moreover q(t)→0 as t↑T: for each ε>0, q(t)≥ε would imply s(t)2=q(t)3≥ε3, contradicting s(t)2→0 once t is sufficiently close to T.

The equation holds: from T2=2r03/(9κ) one has 2r0/(9T2)=κ/r02, so step 1.3 gives r¨(t)=−κ/(r02q(t)2)=−κ/r(t)2. Hence x¨(t)=−κe1/r(t)2=−ke1/(mr(t)2) and F(x(t))=−kr(t)e1/r(t)3=−ke1/r(t)2, so mx¨(t)=F(x(t)) for every t<T. Also q(0)=1, q′(0)=−2/(3T), and step 1.2 gives x(0)=r0e1 and x˙(0)=−(2r0/(3T))e1=v0e1. Since q(t)>0 for t<T, x(t)∈Q and t∈I0=R throughout; by [L1], x is a motion through the datum on (−∞,T).

3.1step 2.1L1L4

No extension past T: suppose a motion x~ with the same datum were defined on an interval containing some t∗>T. By the uniqueness clause of [L1] it agrees with x on the intersection of their intervals; that intersection contains [0,T) because the interval of x~ contains both 0 and t∗. It is continuous at T, and step 1.3 gives q(t)→0 as t↑T, so x~(T)=lim⁡t↑Tx(t)=0. But a motion's values must lie in Q=R3∖{0} at every time of its interval, a contradiction. Thus no motion through the datum extends past T, and by the maximality clause of [L1] the maximal motion is x on (−∞,T), with finite right endpoint b=T.

4.1step 1.3step 3.1L4algebra∎

Escape consistent with the breakdown criterion: as t↑T, q(t)→0 while ∣r˙(t)∣=2r0s(t)/(3Tq(t)2)→+∞, since (s(t)/q(t)2)2=1/q(t)→+∞ and the quotient is positive. Thus the state (x(t),x˙(t)) leaves every compact subset of U=Q×R3 near T in both ways predicted by Maximal Newtonian motions and the compact-continuation criterion: finite-time breakdown requires escape from every compact subset of the time-state domain clause 4: its velocity is unbounded and its position approaches the excluded configuration. The refuted all-time-existence statement is false for this model.

Remarks

  • External-source singularity. The motion falls radially into the force center and reaches it at the finite time T; the model, which excludes the configuration x=0 from its domain, has no dynamics past that event. This is a computation inside the model, not a claim about the fate of a physical body near a point mass: an actual system would require a different model (for instance a finite-size body, or a modified short-distance force) across the regime where the idealization fails.

  • Energy check. The datum has zero reduced energy: m2∣x˙(0)∣2+U(x(0))=m2⋅2κr0−kr0=kr0−kr0=0, the parabolic case of the radial problem, consistent with arrival at the center with unbounded speed rather than a turning point.

  • No contradiction with the continuation theorem. The theorem requires escape from every compact subset of the open state domain at a finite maximal endpoint. Step 3.1 establishes nonextendibility independently, and step 4.1 verifies this necessary escape condition.
