How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A divergence-free current with nonzero flux through a timelike 3-simplex
Statement refuted
Statement refuted: "Let carry the flat metric , the identity chart and the chart orientation, and let be a smooth vector field on with on (The metric volume form, current flux through 3-faces and finite-chain charges, A smooth vector field is a smooth section of the tangent bundle). Then the flux of through every smooth singular -simplex of vanishes."
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The flat Lorentzian four-manifold with identity chart, , chart orientation, metric-selected connection and metric volume form ; the vector field ; and the affine smooth singular -simplex of the standard -simplex into the plane ,
On the identity chart , so is the coordinate connection and ; (The metric volume form, current flux through 3-faces and finite-chain charges, The derivative of the metric density and the chart formula for the divergence of a vector field, Existence and uniqueness of the metric-selected connection of a nondegenerate metric, and its extension to tensor fields).
The flux of through a smooth singular -simplex — the affine map of the Facts, a special case of the simplex convention restated in The metric volume form, current flux through 3-faces and finite-chain charges clause (b) (library definition def-smooth-singular-simplex) — is , and the integral is the ordinary multiple integral of the pullback coefficient (The metric volume form, current flux through 3-faces and finite-chain charges clause (b), Integral of a form over a smooth singular simplex).
For a non-null face with velocity basis and adapted unit normal (so that is positively oriented, and ), the pullback of on equals (Divergence, Stokes flux balance and the non-null face formula for a Lorentzian current clause (c), Chart independence of the metric volume form, its value on orthonormal frames, and the unit normal and density of a non-null hyperplane).
Using the simplex-integral zero-extension convention on , the indicator sections are integrable interval indicators; Riemann--Fubini on product rectangles, with lower and upper section integrals and content-zero exceptional sections identifies their repeated integrals with the multiple integral. The standard -simplex has volume : the iterated integral evaluates by the fundamental theorem of calculus; hence the integral of a constant over is (The lower and upper Darboux integrals of a bounded on as and , Darboux integrability as their equality, and the notation , The second fundamental theorem: if is differentiable on with and is integrable, then , Integral of a form over a smooth singular simplex).
Counterexample
Let on and let be the affine simplex of the Facts.
(The current is divergence-free.) By [L1], : satisfies the hypothesis of the refuted statement.
(The adapted normal.) The velocity vectors of are , , , spanning the hyperplane , which is nondegenerate (it is the -orthogonal complement of the spacelike vector ). The vector lies in , has , and the ordered basis has determinant in the identity chart, so is positively oriented: is the adapted unit normal.
(The flux.) By [L3] with , and , so and the pullback is the constant scalar coefficient times . By [L2] and [L4],
(Conclusion.) The field is divergence-free on , yet its flux through the smooth singular -simplex is , not zero. Hence the displayed statement is refuted: divergence-freedom is a differential condition on , while the flux through a single face depends on the face and its orientation.
Remarks
-
Consistency with the flux theorem. The counterexample does not contradict the balance identity of Divergence, Stokes flux balance and the non-null face formula for a Lorentzian current: for a -chain whose boundary contains and an opposite face, the two fluxes differ by the side flux, and the identity is a statement about that difference, not about the vanishing of each term.
-
Choice of orientation. Had the simplex been oriented with the opposite normal, the flux would be ; the nonzero value is independent of this sign convention.
