How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The H^1 to C^0 bound fails at s minus m equal to one: dyadic shells have an unbounded C^0/H^1 ratio
Statement refuted
Refuted statement: "for and on (so that ) there is a constant with for every ."
Facts & Assumptions
Given: the torus , its characters , the norms and , and the shell family .
Fourier norm formula: for with finitely many nonzero coefficients, and ; in particular for the shell family, whose coefficients are on the shell (Periodic Fourier differentiation identity and equivalence of the derivative and Fourier-weight Sobolev norms, The 2 pi-periodic three-torus, its normalized measure, test functions and the Sobolev spaces H^s).
Lattice-point counts: there are constants with for all (the shell is a spherical annulus of radius comparable to ; each unit cube contains at most one lattice point and volume comparison gives both bounds) (The 2 pi-periodic three-torus, its normalized measure, test functions and the Sobolev spaces H^s). [L2]
In the embedding lemma the hypothesis is used exactly at the finiteness of ; at this sum diverges (Periodic Sobolev embedding: H^s on the three-torus controls C^m when s minus m exceeds three halves). [L3]
Counterexample
For let Then and for constants independent of , so the ratio is at least : no constant exists, and the identity embedding bound fails at . The raw shell norms grow; equivalently, the normalized sequence has unit norm and unbounded norm.
Proof technique: direct.
(Norms of the shell family.) By [L1] and [L2]: , so ; and .
(Divergence of the ratio.) Hence ; if a constant satisfied the claimed bound, applying it to would give a uniform bound on this ratio, a contradiction.
(Consistency with the sharp threshold.) The failure occurs exactly at the exponent where the weight sum of [L3] diverges; by Periodic Sobolev embedding: H^s on the three-torus controls C^m when s minus m exceeds three halves the bound does hold for , so the counterexample is sharp and does not contradict the embedding theorem.
