How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

The massive free-particle family has no strong zero-mass limit on Schwartz states

Physical scope

A refutation, in the spin-zero massive free-particle model, of the specific limit asserted below: convergence K_m f to K_0 f in L^2 for every Schwartz vector to a self-adjoint K_0, together with a finite free-frequency limit at each fixed nonzero wave number. One explicit Schwartz vector has divergent kinetic-operator norm; for every fixed normalized operator-domain state with nonzero momentum second moment the kinetic expectation diverges as m tends to zero. For each m>0, this class has finite nonzero model root-mean-square speed v_rms,m=m^{-1}(sum_j ||P_j psi||^2)^{1/2}; that speed is not held fixed as m varies. The formal free frequency at each fixed nonzero wave number also diverges. The item excludes that specified limit, not other mathematical notions of convergence or independently specified massless quantum models, and asserts no empirical claim. The radiation extension is a separate adopted model.

Spin-sector specialization. Throughout this counterexample, specialize P5 to the spin label s=0, so the one-particle Hilbert space is the scalar space L2(R3;C). The argument concerns this explicit sector of the massive model.

Statement refuted

In the one-particle model of Kinematics and massive-particle model postulate P5: Newtonian frames and one-particle operators with potential V=0, the free kinetic operators Km:=−ℏ22mΔ,D(Km)=W2,2(R3;C),m>0, have a massless strong-action limit: there exist a self-adjoint operator K0≥0 on L2(R3;C) with S(R3;C)⊆D(K0) such that Kmf→K0f in L2 for every f in the Schwartz class S(R3;C) as m↓0, and the formal free-plane-wave frequencies of this massive family have a finite pointwise limit at every fixed nonzero wave vector. Precisely, for k∈R3∖{0} with [k]=ℓ−1, define ωm(k):=ℏ∣k∣2/(2m) by the plane-wave solution ei(k⋅x−ωm(k)t) of the free equation; the additional claim is that lim⁡m↓0ωm(k) is finite, where [ωm]=τ−1 under Dimensions, SI unit conventions and quantity types of the framework.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: ℏ>0; the spin-zero one-particle sector of P5, with V=0; for m>0 the operator Km=−ℏ22mΔ with domain W2,2(R3;C) (Kinematics and massive-particle model postulate P5: Newtonian frames and one-particle operators clause (iv), Integer-order Sobolev spaces and their norms); the free momentum operators Pj of Position and momentum operators on Euclidean L2; and the explicit normalized state ψL0 of [L3].

[L1]

The free-plus-bounded-potential theorem with V=0 and c=2π2ℏ2/m gives: −ℏ22mΔ is self-adjoint on W2,2(R3;C), and for every Schwartz function g one has −ℏ22mΔg=−ℏ22m(Δg) evaluating the Laplacian classically (Real multiplication operators and free plus bounded-potential Schrödinger operators clauses (b) and (c), Schwartz space and its seminorms).

[L2]

Momentum operators: Pj=−iℏDj is self-adjoint with domain D(Pj)={u: Dju∈L2}, and −ℏ22mΔ=12m∑jPj2 as operators on the classes S⊆W2,2; for u∈D(Pj) one has ⟨Pju,u⟩=⟨u,Pju⟩ and ∥Pju∥2=⟨Pju,Pju⟩ (Self-adjointness, Fourier representation and translation identities of position and momentum clause (b), Position and momentum operators on Euclidean L2).

[L3]

An explicit length-scaled test state is obtained by putting ηL0(x)=exp⁡ ⁣(−1/(1−∣x∣2/L02)) for ∣x∣<L0 and ηL0(x)=0 for ∣x∣≥L0, where L0>0 has dimension ℓ. Every interior derivative is a finite sum of a polynomial in (1−∣x∣2/L02)−1 and the bounded coordinates times this exponential; the exponential beats every polynomial at the boundary, so all derivatives extend by zero and ηL0∈Cc∞. For g(s)=e−1/(1−s), g′(s)=−e−1/(1−s)(1−s)−2≠0 for 0≤s<1, so ∇ηL0(x)=2xL0−2g′(∣x∣2/L02) is nonzero for 0<∣x∣<L0. With J:=∫∣y∣<1exp⁡ ⁣(−2/(1−∣y∣2)) d3y∈(0,∞), set N:=J−1/2 and ψL0(x):=NL0−3/2ηL0(x). Change of variables x=L0y gives ∥ψL0∥2=1 and [ψL0]=ℓ−3/2; direct differentiation at x=0 gives ΔψL0(0)=−6Ne−1L0−7/2≠0.

[L4]

Frequencies of the free model: for k∈R3, ω∈R, and [k]=ℓ−1, the smooth formal plane-wave mode ψk,ω(x,t)=ei(k⋅x−ωt) satisfies iℏ∂tψk,ω=−ℏ22mΔψk,ω at every point exactly when ℏω=ℏ2∣k∣22m, that is ω=ℏ∣k∣22m, because ∂tψk,ω=−iωψk,ω and Δψk,ω=−∣k∣2ψk,ω and the exponential does not vanish (Sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients: (f+g)′(c)=f′(c)+g′(c), (αf)′(c)=αf′(c), (fg)′(c)=f′(c)g(c)+f(c)g′(c), and (f/g)′(c)=(f′(c)g(c)−f(c)g′(c))/g(c)2 when g(c)≠0, Kinematics and massive-particle model postulate P5: Newtonian frames and one-particle operators clause (iv)); the frequency has dimension τ−1 in the conventions of Dimensions, SI unit conventions and quantity types of the framework. For k≠0 this plane wave is not in L2(R3), so it is a formal mode rather than a normalized state.

[L5]

For ψ∈W2,2(R3;C), with F2 the unitary Plancherel transform, the free kinetic operator has Fourier multiplier 2π2ℏ2∣ξ∣2/m and Pj has multiplier 2πℏξj; hence ⟨Kmψ,ψ⟩=2π2ℏ2m∫∣ξ∣2∣F2ψ(ξ)∣2dξ=12m∑j∥Pjψ∥22 (Real multiplication operators and free plus bounded-potential Schrödinger operators clauses (b)-(c), Self-adjointness, Fourier representation and translation identities of position and momentum, Plancherel theorem).

Counterexample

technique · direct; compute the operator values and frequencies on explicit smooth data under the stated assumptions
1.1givenL1L3algebra

[No strong limit on a smooth class] Take the normalized ψL0∈Cc∞(R3;C) of [L3], for which ΔψL0≠0. By [L1], KmψL0=−ℏ22mΔψL0, so ∥KmψL0∥2=ℏ22m∥ΔψL0∥2→+∞ as m↓0. Therefore this family is not Cauchy in L2 on this Schwartz vector and cannot converge there to K0ψL0 for any operator K0; in particular it cannot converge on every Schwartz state.

1.2givenL2L5algebra

[Every fixed state with nonzero momentum second moment has divergent kinetic expectation] Let ψ∈W2,2(R3;C) be fixed and normalized, and suppose p2(ψ):=∑j∥Pjψ∥22>0. Each first weak derivative of ψ lies in L2 by its W2,2 membership, so [L2] places ψ in every D(Pj) and makes each ∥Pjψ∥22 finite. For each mass m>0, its model root-mean-square speed is vrms,m(ψ):=m−1p2(ψ)1/2, which is finite and nonzero; this speed is not held fixed when m varies. By [L5], its kinetic expectation is ⟨Kmψ,ψ⟩=p2(ψ)/(2m)→+∞ as m↓0. Thus the claimed divergence holds for exactly the stated fixed-state class, with no claim for vectors outside this operator domain.

1.3givenL4algebra

[Frequency divergence] By [L4], [ℏ∣k∣2/m]=τ−1, and for each fixed wave number k≠0 the formal free frequency ωm(k)=ℏ∣k∣22m satisfies ωm(k)→+∞ as m↓0. Thus no finite frequency law arises at a fixed nonzero wave number in this limit, and in particular it does not produce a law linear in ∣k∣.

2.1step 1.1step 1.2step 1.3∎

Step 1.1 refutes the asserted strong convergence for every Schwartz state, step 1.2 establishes divergence for the stated nonzero-velocity class, and step 1.3 refutes a finite limiting frequency at each fixed nonzero wave number. Hence the mass-zero limiting inference fails for the displayed massive family; this does not rule out a separately specified massless model.

Remarks

  • What is refuted is the specific limiting assertion in the Statement: strong action convergence on every Schwartz vector to a self-adjoint K0 together with a finite free-frequency limit at each fixed nonzero wave number. The calculation does not decide other operator topologies or separately defined families of massless models. The radiation extension is adopted with its own assumptions and dispersion and detection models.
  • The computations are carried out on the smooth classes where the operator action is the classical one; no spectral convergence theorem and no limiting evolution is asserted, because steps 1.1 and 2.1 show that the relevant limits do not exist on those classes.
