How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The cyclic spring chain, its discrete energy, and the finite-regularity periodic comparison class
Definition
Let be an integer, let and be real parameters, and let . Indices are read modulo : .
(a) The chain. A state of the chain is a pair , where are the positions and the velocities of the nodes. The cyclic spring-chain system is the first-order system
equivalently the second-order system for a curve . Its discrete energy is
(b) Discrete norms and differences. For define the scaled inner product and norm
and for the discrete difference . The discrete Laplacian is .
(c) The comparison class. Let be a nonempty open interval and let be a function that is in the first variable and in the second, is -periodic in ( for all ), and satisfies
For a compact subinterval put (finite when continuous derivatives are bounded on the compact time interval, as assumed in the items that use it), and for define the sampled initial data
Remarks
-
This is a purely mathematical definition. The mechanical reading — equal masses , nearest-neighbour springs of stiffness with , a closed chain — is a model interpretation attached by a consuming physical item; the mathematical results of this collection use only the ODE system and the comparison class.
-
The cyclic indexing (index is index ) makes the chain closed and makes summation by parts in the discrete variable exact; it is part of the model, not a boundary condition. Other boundary conditions are separate models and are not covered by this definition.
-
The comparison class requires a globally defined periodic solution with the regularity in clause (c); the items using it establish existence of the chain solutions and compare the two evolutions on a compact time interval. No uniqueness or continuation statement for is part of this definition.
