How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Homogeneous isotropic medium parameters: phase speed, impedance, refractive index, complex propagation constant and skin depth
Terminology, units and branch conventions for homogeneous isotropic materials at rest in the laboratory frame in the constant scalar branch D=eps E, B=mu H, J_f=sigma E+J_ext with eps,mu>0 and sigma>=0: the lossless phase speed, wave impedance, refractive index and wavenumber, the complex propagation constant kappa=p+iq as the unique root with Re,Im>=0 of k^2=epsmuomega^2+imusigma*omega, and the skin depth. Objects, units and conventions only: no field equation, no dispersion relation for a solution, no attenuation of any concrete field and no material validity or measured value.
Definition
Assume the elementary inertial-rest branch of Declared material-closure branches: linear nondispersive Ohmic response and the causal memory branch in the laboratory region of Laboratory geometry: a restricted inertial chart, its spatial slices and fixed-time fields with the units of Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values, in its isotropic scalar case: the material is at rest in the laboratory frame, are defined by Polarization, magnetization, bound and free sources, and the fields D and H(d), and the constitutive relations of Declared material-closure branches: linear nondispersive Ohmic response and the causal memory branch(b) hold with constant scalars (Fm), (Hm) and (Sm), so that , and the free current is for a declared external free current . Write for the exact vacuum speed of Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values and let (s) be an angular frequency. Define:
(a) [Lossless parameters] with the nonnegative square root of Square roots exist: a unique with ; the positives are , is the phase speed, the wave impedance, the refractive index relative to vacuum and the real wavenumber of the lossless case.
(b) [Complex propagation constant] put , , and Then is the unique with , and ; in the lossless case one has , and real. (The explicit formula is the one of Every complex number has a square root, by an explicit Cartesian formula; the verification , and the uniqueness of the root with , are verified in the well-definedness paragraph below.)
(c) [Skin depth] call (m) the skin depth if , and set if : for and the modulus of equals (, , and ), so is the distance in which that modulus decays by the factor in the direction of increasing ; for there is no attenuation and is infinite rather than a division by zero.
(d) [Status and scope] This item fixes objects, units, branch conventions and terminology only. It asserts no field equation, no dispersion relation for a solution, no attenuation of any concrete field and no material validity. The parameters are declared for the isotropic scalar constant-coefficient branch at rest in the laboratory frame; for the branch is, by Declared material-closure branches: linear nondispersive Ohmic response and the causal memory branch(b), a declared finite-band effective phase-response model with no universal front-speed claim. An exact broadband interpretation must be separately adopted and requires ; that inequality alone does not adopt a broadband interpretation or establish material validity, and a finite-band interpretation remains possible when it holds. No measured value, precision or empirical statement is included.
Well-definedness and conventions
The material assumptions, the rest-frame clause, the isotropic scalar case and the finite-band caveat are those of Declared material-closure branches: linear nondispersive Ohmic response and the causal memory branch(a)-(b) read with the polarization and magnetization definitions; the unit system and the exact constant are those of Framework-local SI units, the vacuum constants and the exact/measured status of their values; the laboratory chart is that of Laboratory geometry: a restricted inertial chart, its spatial slices and fixed-time fields.
The only content beyond notation is the well-definedness of in (b). With , and one has and , so and both defining radicands are nonnegative. If , the same identity gives , hence ; if , uniqueness of nonnegative roots gives and . Also because . Thus and , so because (Square roots exist: a unique with ; the positives are ); hence , by the field arithmetic of The complex numbers as , with the real embedding and imaginary unit . The square roots of are exactly : if , then , and the complex field property ( is a field, every element is uniquely , and every nonzero element has inverse ) gives or . If with and , then , and , where is the multiplicativity of the modulus (Conjugation is an involutive real-field automorphism, , and modulus is definite, multiplicative, and subadditive) and is the modulus of Real and imaginary parts, complex conjugation, and modulus; solving gives and , and since the uniqueness of the nonnegative square root (Square roots exist: a unique with ; the positives are ) gives and , so . In the lossless case one has , , , by Square roots exist: a unique with ; the positives are . All divisions are by strictly positive real numbers, and are nonzero exactly where defined, and no choice principle is used.
