How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Worked vertical geodesics of the open flat slab: affine parameter, limit point and proper time
Example
Assume Countable Choice and Dependent Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (), The axiom of dependent choice: a relation in which every element is related to something admits an -indexed chain) for the general absolutely continuous causal-curve conclusions used here.
Let be the open flat slab of The open flat slab: an incomplete timelike geodesic, a Cauchy slice and global hyperbolicity with restricted inertial chart . Fix and let , . This example records the explicit numbers behind the incompleteness claim of that theorem:
(i) is a smooth future timelike geodesic with affine parameter and unit tangent ; in the chart the geodesic equation is .
(ii) The affine separation and the Lorentzian length of the segment from to , , are with the fixed mathematical scaling constant of Timelike worldlines, proper time, length and four-velocity on a Lorentzian four-manifold, the metric-defined proper-time increment is .
(iii) The maximal domain of a geodesic with the data of is exactly ; the image converges in the ambient affine space to the event , which does not belong to . Hence is future-inextendible in with bounded affine parameter, and the slab is timelike geodesically incomplete.
(iv) The slice is a Cauchy hypersurface and the slab is globally hyperbolic, so the example exhibits incompleteness in a globally hyperbolic model.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The open flat slab with its restricted inertial chart, the point , and real numbers .
is an open subset of the flat model of The flat model: Minkowski space R^4, its standard Lorentz form, inertial charts and cone sets with restricted metric and time orientation ; the restricted chart has constant components ; the Christoffel symbols of the metric-selected connection vanish in this chart, every coordinate curve is a geodesic, and the curvature vanishes (The open flat slab: an incomplete timelike geodesic, a Cauchy slice and global hyperbolicity clause (a), A chart with constant metric components has vanishing metric-selected Christoffel symbols and curvature, The flat model: Minkowski space R^4, its standard Lorentz form, inertial charts and cone sets clauses (b), (c)).
A smooth curve whose coordinate path satisfies the geodesic equation is a geodesic, and coordinate curves with satisfy it (Coordinate geodesic equation, A chart with constant metric components has vanishing metric-selected Christoffel symbols and curvature clause (c)).
For a piecewise- future timelike curve the metric-defined proper-time increment is , and its Lorentzian length is the integral without the factor (Timelike worldlines, proper time, length and four-velocity on a Lorentzian four-manifold clause (d)).
No geodesic of with the initial data of extends the parameter interval beyond ; does not converge to a point of as , and is globally hyperbolic with Cauchy slice (The open flat slab: an incomplete timelike geodesic, a Cauchy slice and global hyperbolicity clauses (b)-(d), Chronology, causality, strong causality, global hyperbolicity and time functions, Spacelike hypersurfaces, acausal sets, Cauchy sets, domains of dependence and Cauchy horizons).
Verification
(The curve is a unit timelike geodesic.) Write for the coordinate path of . Then and , so the geodesic equation holds by [L2] because the Christoffel symbols vanish; hence is a geodesic with affine parameter . Its tangent is , with and ; so it is future unit timelike and the chart geodesic equation is . This is (i).
(Affine and length computations.) By step 1.1, on ; the length of the segment over is therefore , equal to the affine separation, and [L3] gives the metric-defined proper-time increment . This proves (ii).
(Maximal domain, limit point and conclusion.) By [L4] no geodesic of with the data of extends the parameter interval beyond , and does not converge to a point of as : its coordinate tends to , while every point of has . Hence , restricted to the maximal geodesic domain , is future-inextendible in the sense of Causal curves, chronological and causal reachability, and inextendibility clause (d) and its affine parameter is bounded above; the slab is timelike geodesically incomplete. By [L4] the slice is a Cauchy hypersurface and the model is globally hyperbolic, which is (iii) and (iv).
Remarks
-
Conditional physical interpretation. Under the framework's SI length-coordinate convention SI unit and coordinate conventions of the classical gravitational framework clause (b), the coordinates and the affine parameter values are lengths in metres, while has units ; thus is a duration in seconds. If is also interpreted as an ideal clock's worldline, the ideal-clock assumption of Adopted clock, free-fall and light-ray assumptions of the classical gravitational framework clause (i) identifies that metric-defined proper-time increment with the clock-reading difference. This is contextual physical interpretation, outside the mathematical claims and their Verification. The postulate restricts it to ideal clocks in the smooth classical test-field regime without back-reaction; it asserts no real device is exactly ideal and reports no measured reading. The mathematical example itself supplies neither this assumption nor empirical evidence.

Numbers used. The affine parameter interval has length in these coordinates; the value is a coordinate statement about the chart and changes under affine reparametrizations of by a constant factor, under which the incompleteness verdict is unchanged.
-
Not a singularity. Curvature vanishes identically on the slab; the incompleteness is caused by the absent boundary of the region, not by curvature blow-up.
