How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

An ideal flat two-path distribution: exact coherent and which-path bin laws

Physical scope

An exact computation in the declared two-path preparation model of the pair for a declared product-form, flat (indicator) pair of path amplitudes in the spin-zero reading: the normalized coherent and which-path probabilities of the overlap region and of the two outer regions of the declared detection coordinate, the dark overlap region at relative phase pi, and the positivity of partially overlapping bins. The example is a conditional computation in the declared model; it asserts no detector response, no sampling model, no measured counts and no claim that a laboratory apparatus realizes flat amplitudes.

Example

Adopt the declared two-path preparation and detection model The declared two-path preparation model and its ideal detection bins in its spin-zero reading r=1, and the coherent and which-path detection laws Coherent and which-path detection laws of the declared two-path model. Assume the Axiom of Countable Choice and the Axiom of Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (ACω), The Axiom of Choice), as required by the preparation and detection-law suppliers. Fix lengths 0<d<L<∞, measured in metres, and declare the two intervals I1:=[−d2−L2, −d2+L2],I2:=[d2−L2, d2+L2] on the first spatial coordinate, measured in metres, whose overlap region O:=I1∩I2=[d2−L2, −d2+L2] has length L−d>0; let g∈L2(R2;C) satisfy ∥g∥2=1 and choose a Borel representative, which exists by completion of Borel Lebesgue measure (L(Rn) is exactly the completion of the restriction of λn to the Borel sets). Its amplitude unit is m−1 in the two-dimensional position measure; declare the flat path amplitudes f1:=L−1/21I1,f2:=L−1/21I2. Define the declared path components by ψj(x1,x2,x3):=fj(x1) g(x2,x3)(j=1,2). In these SI conventions each fj has unit m−1/2 and each ψj has unit m−3/2, as required for a normalized position wave function on R3; the probabilities below are dimensionless. A slab bin is a set B1×R2 with B1⊆R Borel. Then:

(a) ψ1,ψ2∈H0=L2(R3;C) with ∥ψ1∥=∥ψ2∥=1, so the declared data are admissible, and the model is admissible at every phase: on I1∖I2 the combination f1+eiφf2 equals L−1/2 independently of φ, and that region has length d>0. Since ∥g∥=1, ∥ψ1+eiφψ2∥2=∥f1+eiφf2∥2≥d/L>0.

(b) For every slab bin, with Nφ:=∥f1+eiφf2∥2=2+2(L−d)Lcos⁡φ, μρcoh(φ)G(B1×R2)=1Nφ∫B1∣f1+eiφf2∣2dx,μρmix(w)G(B1×R2)=w ∣B1∩I1∣+(1−w) ∣B1∩I2∣L.

(c) The coherent density ∣f1+eiφf2∣2 equals 2(1+cos⁡φ)L on O, equals 1L on the symmetric difference I1△I2, and vanishes outside I1∪I2; consequently μρcoh(φ)G(O×R2)=(L−d)(1+cos⁡φ)L+(L−d)cos⁡φ,μρcoh(φ)G((Ij∖I3−j)×R2)=d2L+2(L−d)cos⁡φ for j=1,2, and for the balanced which-path preparation w=12 μρmix(1/2)G(O×R2)=L−dL,μρmix(1/2)G((Ij∖I3−j)×R2)=d2L.

(d) At φ=π the coherent law assigns probability zero to the whole overlap region O of positive length, while the balanced which-path law assigns it probability (L−d)/L>0; every slab bin contained in O has coherent probability zero, every slab bin meeting I1∖I2 or I2∖I1 in a set of positive length has positive coherent probability, and every slab bin meeting O in a set of positive length has positive which-path probability.

The computation is exact in the declared model; it asserts no detector response, no sampling model, no measured count and no laboratory realization.

Verification

Given: The lengths 0<d<L<∞ and the intervals I1,I2; the unit class g; the amplitudes f1,f2 and components ψ1,ψ2; a Borel set B1⊆R; phases φ∈R and weights w∈[0,1]; the Axiom of Countable Choice and the Axiom of Choice.

Proof technique: direct; compute the product-form norms by Tonelli, read the piecewise-constant densities and their integrals from the interval lengths, apply the declared laws to slab bins, and evaluate the overlap, outer and dark cases.

[L1] The model's coherent and which-path laws are μρcohG(B)=∥ψ1+eiφψ2∥−2∫B∣ψ1+eiφψ2∣2dx and μρmix(w)G(B)=w∫B∣ψ1∣2dx+(1−w)∫B∣ψ2∣2dx for unit components (Coherent and which-path detection laws of the declared two-path model clauses (a) and (b), The declared two-path preparation model and its ideal detection bins clauses (c)-(e), Observable and probability postulate P2: self-adjoint observables, spectral probability and finite unsharp outcomes clause (ii)); the position density and the squared component norm agree almost everywhere (The space Lp(μ) as the quotient by null functions).

[L2] Tonelli's theorem iterates integrals of nonnegative product-measurable functions over σ-finite products (Tonelli's theorem for nonnegative measurable functions on a sigma-finite product).

[L3] A box in Rn is Lebesgue measurable of measure the product of its side lengths, for every choice of included faces (A box in Rn with parameters ai≤bi is Lebesgue measurable of measure ∏i<n(bi−ai), whichever of its faces are included); the integral of a nonnegative simple function is the finite sum of value times measure of its level set (The integral of a nonnegative simple function), and the integral is additive over disjoint measurable sets (Additivity of the nonnegative Lebesgue integral).

[L4] Under the Cartesian identification R3=R×R2, write βn:=λn∣B(Rn). The Borel restrictions β1 and β2 are sigma-finite by exhaustion with bounded boxes. The Borel product theorem identifies B(R)⊗B(R2) with B(R3) (The Borel product of R^m and R^n is the Borel sigma-algebra of R^{m+n}), and the sigma-finite product theorem gives β1×β2 with its rectangle formula (For sigma-finite factors, the product measure exists, has the rectangle formula, is sigma-finite, and is unique). The measures β3 and β1×β2 agree on rational half-open boxes by that formula and [L3]. The family of rational half-open boxes together with ∅ is a π-system and generates B(R3) (For n at least one, open sets, closed sets, compact sets, open balls, boxes, rational open boxes, and rational half-open boxes generate the Borel sigma-algebra on R^n); the rational cubes (−n,n]3 are an increasing finite-measure exhaustion. Sigma-finite measure uniqueness therefore gives β3=β1×β2 (Measures agreeing on a generating pi-system are equal under an increasing finite-measure exhaustion from that pi-system). Finally, each Lebesgue-measurable real and imaginary part of g has a Borel representative: apply completion of Borel measure to its rational superlevel sets; outside their countable union of null exceptions, the rational cuts determine the function (L(Rn) is exactly the completion of the restriction of λn to the Borel sets). If two representatives differ on a null set N⊆R2, choose a Borel null cover Z; the lifted exceptional set is contained in R×Z, which is null by the product rectangle formula. Thus the corresponding product amplitudes define the same L2(R3) class, and Tonelli's product integral is the Lebesgue integral used for the model's state space.

[Product-form norms] By [L4], the Lebesgue integral on R3 of these product functions is the product-measure integral. Thus, for j=1,2, Tonelli and ∥g∥=1, ∥fj∥2=∣Ij∣/L=1 give ∥ψj∥2=∫R∫R2∣fj(x1)∣2∣g(x2,x3)∣2d(x2,x3)dx1=∥fj∥2∥g∥2=1⋅1=1, so ψ1,ψ2 are nonzero unit classes. Since f1=L−1/2 on I1∖I2, a set of length d>0, one has f1+eiφf2≠0 for every φ.

[Densities] On O both indicators equal one, so ∣f1+eiφf2∣2=∣1+eiφ∣2L=2(1+cos⁡φ)L; on I1∖I2 only f1 contributes, giving 1L, and symmetrically on I2∖I1; outside I1∪I2 both vanish. Integrating over R gives ∥f1+eiφf2∥2=2(1+cos⁡φ)(L−d)L+2dL=2+2(L−d)cos⁡φL=Nφ, so the model is admissible at every phase.

[Slab laws] Write ψ1+eiφψ2=(f1+eiφf2)g and ∣ψ1+eiφψ2∣2=∣f1+eiφf2∣2∣g∣2; by [L4] and Tonelli over B1×R2, ∫B1×R2∣ψ1+eiφψ2∣2d(x1,x2,x3)=(∫B1∣f1+eiφf2∣2dx)∥g∥2=∫B1∣f1+eiφf2∣2dx, and likewise ∫B1×R2∣ψj∣2=∫B1∣fj∣2dx=∣B1∩Ij∣/L; substituting into [L1] gives the two displayed laws of (b).

[Overlap, outer and dark values] Using the density values of step 2.1 and additivity of the integral, ∫O∣f1+eiφf2∣2dx=2(1+cos⁡φ)(L−d)L and ∫Ij∖I3−j∣f1+eiφf2∣2dx=dL, so the coherent values of (c) follow after dividing by Nφ=2+2(L−d)cos⁡φL: for the overlap, 2(1+cos⁡φ)(L−d)/L2(L+(L−d)cos⁡φ)/L=(L−d)(1+cos⁡φ)L+(L−d)cos⁡φ, and for each outer region d/L2(L+(L−d)cos⁡φ)/L=d2L+2(L−d)cos⁡φ; the two outer values and the overlap value sum to one. The which-path values follow from ∣B1∩Ij∣/L with w=12 and ∣O∣=L−d, ∣Ij∖I3−j∣=d. At φ=π the coherent overlap value is zero, the outer values are d/(2L−2(L−d))=12 each, and the which-path overlap value is L−dL>0 because L>d; a bin contained in O has ∣B1∩I1∣=∣B1∩I2∣=∣B1∣ and coherent density zero there, while a bin meeting an outer region in a set of positive length meets {f1+eiφf2≠0} in a set of positive length, so its coherent probability is positive; the which-path positivity for bins meeting O follows from 12∣B1∩I1∣/L>0. This proves (c) and (d).

Remarks

  • The dark region is a feature of the declared flat model. The vanishing of the coherent density on all of O at φ=π uses the flat amplitudes and the exact cancellation f1+eiφf2=0 there; a model with unequal weights or non-flat amplitudes need not vanish on a region. At φ=π, a slab bin B1×R2 has positive coherent probability exactly when ∣B1∩(I1△I2)∣>0; it has zero coherent probability exactly when this intersection has length zero. Adding points in O or outside I1∪I2 does not change that probability. These are ideal-bin probabilities; recorded-event probabilities require a declared response model.
  • No data are used. The example computes probabilities in the declared model; it does not report counts, and the flat amplitudes are a declared idealization, not a measured profile.
