How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

A coherent point quotient and its first syzygies

Example

Assume the Axiom of Choice. Let N≥1, let D⊂CN be a polydisc centered at the origin with coordinates z1,…,zN, and let F be the cokernel sheaf of μ:OD⊕N→OD, μ(a1,…,aN)=∑i=1Naizi. The stalk of F is C at the origin and zero at every other point of D. The sheaf F is coherent, and the kernel of μ is generated on D by the coordinate Koszul sections zjei−ziej for 1≤i<j≤N; for N=1 this generating family is empty.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: AC; the integer N≥1, the centered polydisc D, and its coordinate functions.

[A1]

The Axiom of Choice: AC is the theorem's adopted ambient assumption.

[F1]

Coherent module sheaves on complex manifolds: the quotient sheaf is the cokernel of μ, and coherence is local finite type plus locally finite-type relation kernels.

[F2]

Oka coherence and local coherent free resolutions: the structure sheaf OD is coherent.

[F3]

Kernels, cokernels, and finite extensions of coherent module sheaves: coherent modules are closed under finite extensions, kernels, and cokernels.

[F4]

Kernel sheaves are objectwise, while cokernels and images are sheafified and A sequence of abelian sheaves is exact exactly when it is exact on every stalk: the cokernel and kernel sheaves have the stated stalks, and stalkwise equalities determine exact sheaf sequences.

[F6]

The stalk of a presheaf at a point: a stalk consists of germs of sections on neighborhoods of the point.

Verification

1.1F4F6givenchoose

If y∈D is not the origin, choose an index k with zk(y)≠0. Then zk is a unit in the germ ring OD,y, so the ideal generated by the coordinates is the whole stalk and Fy=0.

1.2F4F5F6algebra

At the origin, evaluation ev⁡0:OD,0→C is surjective. Its kernel is generated by z1,…,zN: if f(0)=0, its convergent power series has no constant term, and grouping each nonconstant monomial according to the first coordinate with positive exponent writes f=∑izigi with convergent germs gi; each of the finitely many grouped subseries remains convergent on a smaller polydisc. Conversely every such sum vanishes at 0. Hence F0≅C.

1.3F1F6givenalgebra

At a point y≠0, choose k with zk(y)≠0. If a=(a1,…,aN) is a relation germ in the stalk from [F6], then ak=−∑i≠kaizi/zk, so

a=∑i≠k(ai/zk)(zkei−ziek).

Each vector zkei−ziek is one of the stated pairwise sections or its negative. Thus those sections generate the relation stalk at every nonzero point, including when N=1, where the sum is empty.

1.4F5F6givenconstruct

Let a=(a1,…,aN) be a relation germ at the origin, so ∑iaizi=0. We prove by induction on N that it is generated by the stated pairwise sections. For N=1, a1z1=0 and the germ ring is a domain by [F5], so a1=0. For N>1, restrict to zN=0; the first N−1 coefficients form a relation among z1,…,zN−1. By induction subtract a combination of the pairwise sections with both indices below N, extending their coefficient germs independently of zN. The resulting first N−1 coefficients vanish at zN=0.

2.1F5F6step 1.4algebra

By [F5], each remaining coefficient has a convergent series divisible by zN, so write ai=zNci for i<N. The relation becomes zN(∑i<Ncizi+aN)=0. Since the germ ring is a domain, aN=−∑i<Ncizi, and the remaining vector is ∑i<Nci(zNei−zieN), a combination of the stated pairwise sections.

3.1F1F4F6step 1.3step 2.1

At every point, steps 1.3–2.1 show that the pairwise sections generate the kernel stalk. Therefore [F4] identifies their generated subsheaf with ker⁡μ. The quotient sequence is exact by the definition of F as a cokernel.

4.1A1F2F3step 3.1∎

Under the assumed Axiom of Choice [A1], [F2] makes OD coherent. Repeatedly applying the finite-extension case of [F3] to the split sequences 0→OD⊕(j−1)→OD⊕j→OD→0 shows that OD⊕N is coherent. The cokernel case of [F3] applied to μ then makes F coherent.
