How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Null screen index form with a spacelike initial boundary
Pure Lorentzian differential geometry; the result is a conditional second-variation identity and not an empirical statement.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: The spacelike surface and affine null geodesic specified in the Statement, and Countable Choice.
The screen quotient has a positive metric, is symmetric, and screen covariant differentiation along an affine generator is well-defined (Null normal pairs and screen geometry).
Curvature is ; its algebraic symmetries imply that is self-adjoint on the positive screen (The Riemann curvature operator and the derived Ricci, scalar and Einstein tensors, The algebraic symmetries of the curvature tensor and the symmetry of the Ricci and Einstein tensors).
An embedded surface has local slice coordinates in which it is a coordinate plane (Embedded submanifolds and slice charts).
The exponential map is smooth on a neighborhood of the zero section and is defined for all sufficiently small initial vectors on a compact geodesic segment (The geodesic initial-value problem and the exponential map of the metric-selected connection).
Countable Choice is the only choice principle assumed for the Lorentzian bundle convention (The Axiom of Countable Choice ()).
Proof
Given: [F1]–[F4] and [A1].
Use the smooth tangent-bundle convention in [A1]. For representatives , the curvature symmetries [F2] give . Shifting a representative by a multiple of leaves its screen class and the curvature contraction unchanged. The screen derivative and metric are well-defined by [F1], and is symmetric by [F1]. Thus the integral and boundary terms are symmetric bilinear forms on the specified screen fields, independent of representatives; is well-defined and symmetric.
For a smooth variation , put and . Torsion-freeness gives . The first variation is At , , , , and is tangent to and orthogonal to , so . Differentiating once more and using gives, at , Here the boundary terms from differentiation and integration by parts cancel. The final endpoint contribution is zero because is fixed. At the initial endpoint, let ; along one has . Differentiating this identity gives , so the initial boundary contribution in the bracket is . Substitution proves .
It remains to realize every admissible screen field . Let be its smooth representative in , and let be the unique vector with . Since has zero screen class, it equals for a real number . The lift is smooth, orthogonal to , has screen class , and satisfies and . In the rest of this construction write for this lift . Because , adding a multiple of does not change either integral contraction in the index form; its initial boundary term is evaluated on . Thus step 2.1 applies to this lift and gives the claimed screen index form. By [F4], for sufficiently small the preliminary family is smooth on the compact interval; a finite subdivision supplies the local exponential domains. At , , so . At , use a slice chart from [F3] with . Since , the normal coordinate of has value and zero first derivative at . Choose a smooth cutoff equal to at and zero before the end of this chart. Near , replace the preliminary coordinates by where is any smooth chart curve with and . At this is exactly ; its first -derivative at is unchanged because the correction has zero first derivative. The cutoff vanishes before the final endpoint, so the endpoint remains fixed. This constructs the required variation with screen variational field .
The field realization in step 3.1 and the second-variation calculation in step 2.1 establish the statement for every admissible ; symmetry and well-definedness were proved in step 1.1.
Remarks
For SI interpretation use , dimensionless metric components and in metres. The index form has units of length when a variation field is measured in metres. Its boundary sign is tied to .
