How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Positivity of the internal Hermitian form
Statement
Let be the coefficient-image subspace of a linear monad on after removing its constant orthogonal summand as in the preceding splitting lemma. Thus its reduced middle cohomology has no global sections, is trivial on every -invariant real line, and has a positive section pairing on each such line. Let be the induced nondegenerate Hermitian form on , linear in the first variable, and suppose and for every , with . Then is positive definite on all of .

Proof
Given: Let and let be the source coefficient space, using the normalized end-space identification in . Daggers denote conjugate transposes in fixed coefficient bases.
Fix and write , . On the real line spanned by , its linear coordinate gives and . Expanding in gives and . The matrix is invertible: if for , injectivity of gives , while for every . Its class is a global section of the holomorphically trivial bundle vanishing at . In a trivialization its components lie in by [F4], so the section is identically zero. Exactness of the restricted monad then puts the constant in the image of , a contradiction by [F2].
By step 1.1, the two images and are nondegenerate and -orthogonal. Their orthogonal complement is the section space of : in bases given by and , the first two summands form copies of the exact Euler complex , and the remaining summand is . Thus is positive by [F1].
Use the constant Hermitian matrix on for the following positivity calculation. Put , and The two arguments are in the stated coordinate convention. Step 1.1 gives with invertible for every . Apply the same identities on the infinity line with and to obtain where is invertible. Neither nor is yet assumed positive. Let and The Gram identities imply and ; its range is precisely the real-line section complement in step 2.1. Thus for every , by the actual induced section pairing there. This identification uses the lifted identity and the Euler-complex decomposition of step 2.1; it is not an extra assumption of positivity of on the coefficient images.
Put and . Differentiating in gives and , hence and . Since , the derivatives of are Pairing the real and imaginary derivatives, with the matrix order retained, gives The second equality follows by substituting and the displayed formulas for . As , set Also . Differentiating twice therefore yields This last inequality is congruence by the Hermitian matrix , and does not assume its positivity. Thus for every constant , is a real smooth function with on all of .
Expanding the Gram gives uniformly in direction. Since is invertible, writing with and using the convergent geometric series for proves for all sufficiently large . In particular tends uniformly to zero at infinity. On a closed ball of radius , the function has strictly negative Laplacian for and cannot attain a minimum in the interior, where its real Hessian would be positive semidefinite. Hence . First let , then let with fixed. The uniform decay proves . Thus is positive semidefinite; being Hermitian and invertible, it is positive definite, as is . At any fixed , the -orthogonal direct decomposition has positive Gram on its first two summands and the positive section form of step 2.1 on the third. Therefore is positive definite. If , and the section positivity already gives this conclusion directly; no inverse of a nonzero-dimensional Gram is needed. The preceding splitting lemma retains the positive constant flat summand separately. This proves the stated arbitrary-rank claim without assuming a sign for the infinity Gram matrix .
