How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
An exact nonzero multiple satisfies the Pfaff condition
Statement
Let be open. Let be a one-form on , nowhere zero, and with . Then on .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The stated open domain, regularity, and identity .
A nonsingular Pfaff one-form and its horizontal paths: exterior differentiation is coordinate antisymmetrized partial differentiation, and is the alternating exterior product.
The chain rule for total derivatives: : coordinate compositions with line segments obey the total-derivative chain rule.
A continuous function on is Riemann integrable, by Heine-Cantor and Riemann's criterion and Newton–Leibniz needs only continuity on , differentiability on , and a Riemann-integrable extension of the interior derivative: continuous partial derivatives are integrable on coordinate intervals, and their interval integrals give endpoint differences.
Heine-Borel in : with the Euclidean metric a subset of is compact if and only if it is closed and bounded, and the proof by bisection uses no choice principle; the same holds on the real line and Heine-Cantor: a continuous map from a compact metric space to any metric space is uniformly continuous: a closed coordinate rectangle is compact and continuous second partials on it are uniformly continuous.
Proof
Given: The stated ; write in Euclidean coordinates.
Fix and distinct coordinates . Choose small enough that the coordinate rectangle from to lies in , and set . By [F4] the second partials are uniformly continuous on the chosen closed rectangle. Applying [F2] to coordinate segments and [F3] to their continuous derivatives, Newton–Leibniz gives Each equality follows by taking the two endpoint differences in the outer coordinate and then applying Newton–Leibniz to the inner difference; both integrands are continuous by .
Divide both expressions in step 1.1 by and let . Continuity of and makes each average tend to its value at , so . Since were arbitrary, the coordinate formula in [F1] gives .
Put . Total differentiability gives , and continuity with gives . Hence , so with continuous derivative . For each , is . The increment identity and the total derivative expansions therefore give . Since , for coordinates the coefficient of in is , as the mixed partials cancel by step 2.1. Thus , and because the alternating product vanishes when occurs twice.
