How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Energy-band and grand quantum preparations

Physical scope

Adopted finite-rank energy-band or commuting grand-canonical preparation for a nonzero model under the stated spectral, trace, and joint-moment conditions; infinite-rank band normalization and noncommuting energy-number ensembles are excluded.

Postulate

Fix the positive Boltzmann constant kB>0 in J/K and adopt two preparation rules within the normal-state model of Normal-state quantum measurement interpretation.

Energy-band preparation. Let H=H∗ have spectral PVM EH, and let P=EH(B) be a nonzero finite-rank projection for a specified Borel energy band B⊆R. When the model declares preparation in this band without additional constraints, adopt the density ρ=P/Tr⁡P. This is a uniform preparation over the finite-dimensional range of P; it is not asserted for infinite-rank projections.

Grand preparation. Let H≠{0} be a complex Hilbert space with a specified nonempty finite or countably infinite orthonormal basis (uj)j∈J, so its finite linear span is dense in H. For each ψ=∑j∈Jcjuj∈H, define the diagonal self-adjoint energy and particle-number operators by D(H)={ψ:∑j∣Ejcj∣2<∞},Hψ=∑jEjcjuj;D(N)={ψ:∑j∣njcj∣2<∞},Nψ=∑jnjcjuj, where Ej∈R and nj∈N0. For chemical potential μ∈R, define the diagonal sum Kμ=H−μN by D(Kμ)={ψ:∑j∣(Ej−μnj)cj∣2<∞},Kμψ=∑j(Ej−μnj)cjuj. This specifies the self-adjoint operator sum used in this postulate; on D(H)∩D(N) it agrees with the algebraic difference. Require inf⁡j(Ej−μnj)>−∞. Fix β>0 in J−1 and assume 0<Ξ(β,μ)=∑j∈Je−β(Ej−μnj)<∞. Adopt the normal density ρβ,μ=Ξ−1e−βKμ. For response claims, also require the uniform joint-moment envelopes in Grand-response derivatives are covariances. Here Ej,μ are in J, nj is dimensionless, β=1/(kBT) is in J−1, and Ξ is dimensionless.

These are adopted preparation assumptions, not consequences that a physical system is actually prepared in these states. They do not assert dynamical thermalization, an infinite-rank microcanonical state, or a grand ensemble for noncommuting H,N. The mathematical variational results to which they refer do not prove the physical postulate.

The self-adjointness assertions above are mathematical properties of the specified maximal diagonal domains. For a real sequence (aj)j∈J, let Maψ=∑jajcjuj on D(Ma)={ψ:∑j∣ajcj∣2<∞}. This domain contains the dense finite linear span. By definition, ϕ∈D(Ma∗) exactly when some η∈H satisfies ⟨Maψ,ϕ⟩=⟨ψ,η⟩ for every ψ∈D(Ma), and then Ma∗ϕ=η. Testing ψ=uj gives ηj=ajϕj; hence η∈H forces ∑j∣ajϕj∣2<∞, so ϕ∈D(Ma). Conversely, if ϕ∈D(Ma), then for every ψ∈D(Ma) the two inner products converge by Cauchy–Schwarz and satisfy ⟨Maψ,ϕ⟩=⟨ψ,Maϕ⟩, since every aj is real. Thus D(Ma∗)=D(Ma) and Ma∗=Ma. This applies to aj=Ej, aj=nj, and aj=Ej−μnj.
