How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Null Raychaudhuri and focal-point bound
Conditional mathematical deduction from the stated Ricci inequality; no energy condition or Einstein equation is inferred.
Statement
Assume Countable Choice for the Lorentzian supplier conventions. Let be a smooth time-oriented Lorentzian four-manifold, let be a smooth spacelike two-surface, and let be a smooth null geodesic hypersurface congruence from an open section , as defined in Null normal pairs and screen geometry. Write and fix . Before the first focal instant let be the screen Jacobi map, the optical endomorphism, its expansion, and its shear. Let be the Ricci tensor in The Riemann curvature operator and the derived Ricci, scalar and Einstein tensors. Then, along the generator and before the first focal instant, If along the generator and , then a first focal instant occurs by affine parameter provided the smooth congruence and generator are defined through . Here a focal instant means that the screen Jacobi map loses rank; the conclusion is local along this generator and asserts no curvature singularity.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: Countable Choice; the smooth null congruence and its affine parameter; on the comparison interval; and .
The screen has a positive metric; is the screen Jacobi map, is self-adjoint before its first focal instant, , and (Null normal pairs and screen geometry).
The curvature operator is , its Jacobi equation is , and (The Riemann curvature operator and the derived Ricci, scalar and Einstein tensors).
A geodesic variation field satisfies the Jacobi equation; along a geodesic the Jacobi equation has a unique solution for prescribed value and derivative (The Jacobi equation, geodesic deviation and the initial-value theory of Jacobi fields).
The lowered curvature is antisymmetric in its first pair and in its last pair of indices (The algebraic symmetries of the curvature tensor and the symmetry of the Ricci and Einstein tensors); the Ricci tensor is the contraction specified in [F2].
throughout the generator segment under consideration; this is an explicit mathematical curvature hypothesis, not an energy condition unless a separate field equation is adopted.
and the congruence remains defined up to the comparison parameter if no focal instant has already occurred.
Countable Choice is the only choice principle assumed for the time-oriented Lorentzian input (The Axiom of Countable Choice ()); no arbitrary-index Choice principle is used.
Proof
Given: [F1]-[F4] and [A1]-[A3].
For each , the variation field is a Jacobi field by [F3]. Its screen class satisfies the screen Jacobi equation because [F2]-[F4] give . The screen projection is well-defined since changing by a multiple of changes by zero. Before the first focal instant is invertible, so differentiating gives
The null hypersurface normal makes self-adjoint by [F1]. In two screen dimensions write ; then and The last equality holds because is self-adjoint on the positive screen.
At any point choose the local pair supplied by [F1] and set , so ; complete it by a -orthonormal screen basis . In this basis the inverse metric is Contracting the curvature in [F2], the two null-pair terms in have repeated first or last slots and vanish by [F4], leaving
Taking the trace of the Riccati equation in step 1.1 and substituting steps 2.1 and 2.2 yields which is the stated evolution equation.
Put . While no focal instant has occurred, is invertible and are smooth. By [A1], [A2] and step 3.1, whenever , so remains negative. Therefore If no focal instant occurred on , then would be finite and negative, so . Integrating the inequality instead gives a contradiction. Thus the screen Jacobi map loses rank at some , which is the claimed focal instant.
Remarks
The conclusion is a conditional geometric deduction from the Ricci inequality and the specified congruence. It does not derive from matter assumptions, invoke an Einstein equation, or infer a spacetime singularity from a focal point.
