How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Smoothness of the rest-space family and its Frobenius integrability criterion
Statement
Let be a time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold, let be a nonempty open subset, and let be an observer congruence on (Observer congruences, their observer curves and adapted charts). Let be the smooth -form (The inverse metric, musical isomorphisms and index raising, A smooth differential -form), and let be the rest space of the congruence at (Observers, rest spaces and the spatial projection at an event). Then:
- is nowhere zero on , and is a smooth rank- distribution on (Smooth distributions on a manifold).
- is integrable (Integrable distributions) if and only if on (The exterior derivative by the invariant vector-field formula, The wedge product of differential forms).
- If on , then every point of has a chart in which ; equivalently, the rest spaces are tangent to the level hypersurfaces of .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A time-oriented smooth Lorentzian four-manifold , a nonempty open , an observer congruence on , the one-form and the family .
The congruence is a smooth vector field on with for all , so (Observer congruences, their observer curves and adapted charts).
A vector field on a chart domain is smooth exactly when its coordinate components are smooth (Smoothness of a vector field is equivalent to smooth coordinate components).
In a chart the components of are (Smooth covariant 2-tensor fields on a smooth manifold).
The flat map is , so ; the components of in a chart are (The inverse metric, musical isomorphisms and index raising).
Finite sums and products of functions on chart domains are ( Euclidean maps are closed under componentwise algebra and composition).
A family of tangent subspaces is a smooth rank- distribution exactly when every point has a neighborhood carrying smooth vector fields that are pointwise independent and span the subspaces (A smooth distribution is exactly a locally framed constant-rank family of tangent spaces); smooth distributions are defined as rank- smooth subbundles of , under the axiom (Smooth distributions on a manifold, The Axiom of Countable Choice ()).
For a nowhere-zero one-form , the hyperplane distribution is integrable if and only if (The codimension-one Frobenius criterion).
A rank- smooth distribution is integrable if and only if it is involutive (Involutive distributions), and in that case every point has a coordinate neighborhood in which the distribution equals (Frobenius local coordinate theorem).
Proof
In a chart contained in , the components of are by [L4], where are by [L3] and the components of the smooth field are by [L2]; hence by [L5] the functions are , so is a smooth -form. Moreover for every by [L1] and [L4], so is nowhere zero.
Fix and a chart around ; since by step 1.1, some component is nonzero, and after relabelling the coordinates we may assume . On the open subset where define, for , the vector fields ; their components are by step 1.1, so they are smooth by [L2]. They are tangent to , because . They are pointwise independent on , since the coefficient of in is . Finally they span at every : if satisfies , then , so .
Applying [L7] to the nowhere-zero smooth one-form of step 1.1 gives: is integrable if and only if . This proves claim 2.
Step 2.1 exhibits, near each point of , three smooth pointwise-independent fields spanning the ; by [L6] the family is therefore a smooth rank- distribution on . This proves claim 1.
Assume on ; by step 2.2 the distribution is integrable. Then [L8] gives, near every point of , a chart in which ; the slices with constant are integral hypersurfaces tangent to the rest spaces. This proves claim 3.
Steps 3.1, 2.2 and 3.2 prove claims 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
