How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Resolved dissipation of adopted eddy viscosity
Pointwise resolved stress-transfer identity for the adopted smooth, periodic, three-dimensional incompressible Newtonian closure. The nonnegative result concerns only the modeled eddy-viscosity stress. It does not assert a sign for the exact filtered covariance, model accuracy, a solution-existence result, or universal absence of backscatter.
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Countable Choice for the normalized periodic torus convention. Let be an open time interval, m, , and . Spatial coordinates are in metres and time is in seconds. All spacetime fields below use the ordered domain and evaluation ; for a time-indexed spatial field , write . Let be smooth, dimensionless, supported in a compact subset of , and satisfy . Define and , using volume measure on a period cell. Let be periodic and divergence-free, with constant density kg m and constant dynamic viscosity Pa s. Put m s and let be pressure per unit mass in m s. Assume the unforced incompressible Newtonian equation
For this filter define the exact covariance stress and transfer by and . For real matrices set and .
Use the positive smooth unit-mass periodic convolution filter of width to define . Define the resolved rate-of-strain matrix by
The matrix has units s; let be the identity matrix.
Let be prescribed specific unresolved kinetic energy and kinematic eddy-viscosity fields, with units m s and m s, respectively. Adopt the modeled specific stress as the replacement for the exact filtered covariance in the resolved model equation, and define . Then, at every ,
If additionally and the specific pressure is smooth, the exact filtered-covariance energy theorem applies to this smooth solution. Its resolved-energy balance contains the exact stress contraction on the right-hand side. Replacing that stress slot by in the adopted closure model therefore contributes the displayed nonpositive term to the modeled balance. This is a conditional model deduction; it does not identify the modeled stress with the exact covariance or assert a sign for exact filtered transfer.

Facts & Assumptions
Given: Countable Choice, a smooth periodic divergence-free , the stated filter and model fields, and the physical and mathematical conditions in the Statement.
Adopted closure assumption from Isotropic eddy viscosity and unresolved energy model: the resolved equation uses in place of the exact covariance; and . This is a modeled replacement, not an equality about the fine-scale velocity.
Adopted Countable Choice axiom: every countable family of nonempty sets has a choice function (The Axiom of Countable Choice ()); the normalized torus supplier convention retains this hypothesis.
Constant-density incompressible Newtonian model: the physical model has constant , constant , , dynamic stress , and kinematic viscosity . Its current Definition asserts no solution existence; this theorem assumes the smooth periodic subcase explicitly.
Exact filtered covariance and resolved-energy balance: under Countable Choice, a smooth periodic divergence-free field, the positive convolution filter, and, for the momentum/energy conclusion, and the stated incompressible equation, the exact filtered balance contains on its right-hand side. The theorem does not assert a sign for exact .
Normalization, periodization, and derivative commutation for the positive fluid filter: for the stated smooth periodic field and fixed convolution kernel, the filter commutes with spatial derivatives; hence .
Positive periodic convolution filter and subfilter stress: the exact subfilter stress is and the exact forward-transfer convention is . The model uses a separate tensor and transfer with the same contraction convention.
Proof
Write . Then , with symmetric and skew-symmetric. Pairing terms and gives , since and ; diagonal terms vanish because . Hence .
By [A2], [F3], and the given , , so .
Contract [A1] with and use steps 1.1 and 1.2 to obtain . Therefore by .
Under the additional equation hypotheses in [F2], the exact resolved-energy balance has the stress contraction on the right. The physical branch definition [F1] and exact covariance/transfer convention [F4] fix this model context. The postulate [A1] replaces that stress slot only in the modeled equation, so its contribution is by step 2.1. This conclusion concerns the adopted closure term, not the exact covariance.
