How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The declared central-potential model: spherical reduction of smooth compactly supported radial states
A conditional consequence of the declared central-potential model of this pair: a smooth reduced function u compactly supported away from the origin, transported to the three-dimensional vector psi = u(r)Y_lm(Omega)/r of the spherical sector (l,m), lies in the model's energy domain, and the model's assigned energy acts on psi by the declared radial differential expression with the effective potential v(r) + hbar^2 l(l+1)/(2 m r^2); consequently the radial equation holds almost everywhere exactly when the linear operator equation holds on that vector, including the zero vector. A nonzero reduced function alone defines a pure preparation, whose position law is normalized and which is stationary when the radial equation holds. The statement is an exact identity for the declared model and the cited mathematics; it asserts no converse for arbitrary reduced classes, no completeness of any family of radial solutions, no spectral classification, no measured energy and no empirical result, and it excludes the Coulomb potential from its hypotheses, which are treated by the following items of the page.
Statement
Adopt the state and composition postulate P1, the observable and probability postulate P2, the autonomous-dynamics postulate P4 and the kinematics and massive-particle model postulate P5, read through the declared central-potential model of The declared central-potential model: state space, assigned energy operator, spherical reading and bound-state vocabulary with mass parameter , spin label , a real bounded measurable central potential and assigned energy operator (State and composition postulate P1: Hilbert spaces, preparations and composite systems, Observable and probability postulate P2: self-adjoint observables, spectral probability and finite unsharp outcomes, Autonomous dynamics postulate P4: self-adjoint generators and unitary evolution, Kinematics and massive-particle model postulate P5: Newtonian frames and one-particle operators, Assigned sharp observables and the outcome law of the framework, Assigned energy observable, unitary flow and the two pictures of autonomous evolution). Assume the Axiom of Countable Choice and the Axiom of Choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice (), The Axiom of Choice). Let , , let , and define with the complete orthonormal family and the unitary of Angular radial unitary reduction. Then:
(a) lies in , its image under is the finite-support vector whose only potentially nonzero entry is the -entry , and is its position quadratic measure. For , the unit vector represents its pure preparation and has position outcome law
(b) for almost every , the two sides being equal as classes; thus the model's assigned energy acts on the smooth spherical sector by the declared radial differential expression with effective potential ;
(c) if and satisfies the declared radial equation pointwise on , then , when , is a nonzero stationary vector of the model with energy and the pure preparation is stationary, every assigned sharp observable having a time-independent outcome law in it. For , only the linear identity is asserted and no pure preparation is assigned;
(d) for every , including , the radial equation holds for almost every if and only if as Hilbert-space vectors. If is continuous on , this radial equality is also equivalent to its pointwise version. For general measurable , no pointwise converse is asserted.
The statement is conditional on P1, P2, P4, P5 and the declared model; it asserts no converse for general reduced functions, no completeness of any family of radial solutions, no discrete spectrum, and no measured energy, and it does not apply to the Coulomb potential, whose self-adjointness and spectral theory are supplied separately.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The declared central-potential model with parameters , real bounded measurable central , assigned energy operator ; the unitary and family of the angular-radial theorem; , , and ; the Axiom of Countable Choice and the Axiom of Choice.
The model's energy operator. and for every , where is the weak Laplacian; on and (The declared central-potential model: state space, assigned energy operator, spherical reading and bound-state vocabulary clauses (b), (c), The three-dimensional free Schrödinger operator as the weak Laplacian on its Sobolev domain clauses (a), (b)).
Smooth spherical vectors. For every and every the function lies in , its image under is the finite-support vector with -entry , and (Angular radial unitary reduction clauses (a), (d)).
Classical derivatives are weak derivatives. On an open set , if has real and imaginary parts of class , then for every multi-index the classical derivative is locally integrable and is the weak derivative ; in particular on , taken as an open subset of , the classical second partial derivatives of a function are its weak second partial derivatives there (Classical derivatives agree with weak derivatives, Weak derivative of a locally integrable function).
Position law. In a unit vector the framework's Born position law is for every Borel (Position and momentum outcome laws of the massive spin-s model clause (b)).
Stationary preparations. For an assigned energy observable with spectral measure and flow , a nonzero vector is an eigenvector with eigenvalue if and only if the pure preparation is stationary, and then every assigned sharp observable has a time-independent outcome law in it (Energy conservation, conserved sharp observables and the stationary eigenrays clause (c), Assigned energy observable, unitary flow and the two pictures of autonomous evolution).
Proof
Given: The data of the statement and [F1]-[F5].
[Regularity, domain and sector] By [F2], , and by [F1] the Sobolev space is exactly ; hence and the image of under is the finite-support vector with entry at and zero elsewhere. The position quadratic measure is the integral of the nonnegative integrable function . Unitarity of gives , so if then and is unit; [F4] gives its normalized position law . This proves clause (a), including the zero quadratic measure when .
[Weak versus classical Laplacian] On the open set the function is of class and, by [F3] applied there with , its classical second partial derivatives are its weak second partial derivatives on that set. Hence almost everywhere on , which is conull in ; since both sides lie in by step 1.1, the two classes agree. By [F2], ; therefore the class equals .
[Energy action and stationarity] By [F1], ; on one has . Adding the two classes by step 2.1 gives clause (b). If in addition satisfies the declared radial equation with energy , then the bracket in clause (b) equals pointwise on , and since equality on the conull set determines the class, ; if , step 1.1 gives , so [F5] makes the preparation stationary and every assigned sharp observable has a time-independent outcome law in it. If , then and the equality is ; no ray or pure preparation is formed. This is clause (c).
[The exact almost-everywhere converse] Put . This measurable function belongs to , because and its derivatives have compact support away from zero and is bounded. Step 3.1 identifies with . The angular-radial unitary and normalized harmonic of [F2] give ; equivalently, polar integration cancels the factor with the volume factor and the angular squared norm is one. Thus holds exactly when almost everywhere. This includes without a preparation interpretation. If is continuous then is continuous, and a continuous function vanishing almost everywhere on vanishes everywhere: a nonzero value would persist with positive magnitude on an open interval of positive measure. This proves clause (d), while for measurable the conclusion remains almost everywhere.
Remarks
- Only the sector . The statement concerns the one-parameter family of smooth vectors whose reduced function is supported away from the origin in the single sector ; no assertion is made about a general element of , for which the spherical components are only classes.
- Exact scope of the converse. Clause (d) concerns the specified smooth compactly supported reduced functions and equality almost everywhere for measurable potentials. Changing at a single radius leaves its multiplication operator unchanged and cannot be detected by the Hilbert-space equation, so that equation cannot force a pointwise radial equality for an arbitrary measurable representative. A converse for arbitrary reduced classes would additionally require half-line regularity and endpoint theory; the Coulomb items supply their own separate realization.
- Units. The radial expression carries the dimension of an energy by the conventions of Dimensions, SI unit conventions and quantity types of the framework: times a second derivative in has dimension , and the barrier term likewise.
