How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Exact selective tests and confidence sets from the pivot

Statement

Assume AC and the setup of Polyhedral selective normal pivot, and suppose Pμ(S)>0 for at least one μ∈Rn. Write ΘS={μ∈Rn:Pμ(S)>0}. The selected sample space is S with trace Borel sigma-algebra B(S)={S∩B:B∈B(Rn)}, and for μ∈ΘS let Qμ=Pμ( ⋅∣S) be the conditional sampling law. For ϑ∈R, define pϑ(Y)=2min⁡{qϑ(Y),1−qϑ(Y)}. For the point null H0(ϑ)={μ∈ΘS:ηTμ=ϑ}, assume H0(ϑ)≠∅. Then pϑ is a valid p-value in the conditional experiment (Qμ) and is Uniform(0,1) under every null law. For every α∈[0,1], rejecting when pϑ≤α has conditional type-I error exactly α. If, in addition, a nonempty alternative Θ1⊆ΘS∖H0(ϑ) is specified, the test has size α and hence level α.

For 0≤α≤1, put Θη={ηTμ:μ∈ΘS} and Cη(Y)={ϑ∈Θη:α/2≤qϑ(Y)≤1−α/2}. This is an exact selective confidence set for the functional τ(μ)=ηTμ in the sense of Exact selective confidence set for a parameter functional: for every μ with Pμ(S)>0, Qμ{ηTμ∈Cη(Y)}=1−α. The guarantee is for one fixed contrast and one fixed selection event, not simultaneous coverage over a selected family.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: AC, a conditional experiment obtained by conditioning on S, 0≤α≤1, and a fixed contrast η≠0.

[A1]

AC is required by the normal-law and Gaussian projection suppliers in the pivot theorem. The Axiom of Choice

[F1]

For each μ∈ΘS, the pivot section qηTμ is Borel measurable and Uniform(0,1) under Qμ. The truncated normal selective pivot is conditionally uniform

[F2]

A p-value is a measurable [0,1]-valued statistic whose lower-tail probabilities are bounded by their thresholds under every parameter in the null. Valid p-values

[F3]

A valid p-value threshold rule is a level-α test whenever the null and alternative are nonempty and disjoint. Valid p-values yield level tests for nonempty disjoint alternatives

[F4]

Test size is the supremum of rejection probabilities on the nonempty null, and level α means size at most α. Test size and power

[F5]

In an experiment, a confidence set for a functional is measured by the probability of its measurable membership section under each corresponding sampling law; exact coverage is equality. Exact selective confidence set for a parameter functional

[F6]

A pivot is a parameter-indexed measurable family with a common sampling law. Pivotal quantities

[F7]

Inverting a pivot over a measurable acceptance set of probability 1−α gives exact confidence coverage 1−α. Coverage from pivot inversion and exact calibration

The conditional laws Qμ form an experiment on the selected data space whenever Pμ(S)>0. Statistical experiments

Proof

1.1A1F1F2givenalgebra

For any μ in the conditional experiment, [F1] gives qηTμ(Y)∼Uniform⁡(0,1) under Qμ. For 0≤u≤1, the event 2min⁡{q,1−q}≤u is the union of the two tails q≤u/2 and q≥1−u/2, whose uniform probabilities sum to u (their intersection has measure zero). Thus, if H0(ϑ)≠∅, pϑ is uniform under every null law and is measurable by the pivot formula; [F2] makes it a valid p-value.

2.1A1F1F3F4step 1.1algebra

If H0(ϑ)≠∅ and the alternative is nonempty, [F3] applied to pϑ gives conditional size at most α. By [F4] size is the supremum of the null rejection probabilities; since every null law has the exact uniform p-value distribution from step 1.1, Qμ(pϑ≤α)=α for every null μ, so the size is exactly α.

By [F1], [F6], and [F8], qμ(Y):=qηTμ(Y) is a pivot in the conditional experiment. Its full-parameter inversion is Cfull(Y)={μ′∈ΘS:qηTμ′(Y)∈[α/2,1−α/2]}. The acceptance interval has uniform probability 1−α, so [F7] gives exact coverage for Cfull. Its image under μ′↦ηTμ′ is exactly Cη(Y) by the definition of Θη. For each fixed true μ, membership ηTμ∈Cη(Y) is precisely α/2≤qηTμ(Y)≤1−α/2, which has Qμ-probability 1−α by [F1]. The membership section is measurable by the Borel pivot formula, so [F5] applies.
