How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Quantum Verma modules , highest weight vectors, and the simple highest weight quotient
Definition
Let be a symmetrizable Cartan datum with for all (Symmetrizable Cartan data for quantum groups) and let be its Drinfeld–Jimbo algebra (The Drinfeld-Jimbo quantized enveloping algebra by generators and relations) with Borel subalgebra and negative half (Positive, negative and toral quantum subalgebras and their root gradings). Fix and let be the Borel character module on which acts by the scalar and every acts as (the character is a well-defined -algebra homomorphism , Verification, step 1.1). The quantum Verma module is the induced module
a left -module, with distinguished vector (The quotient ring with for the quotient/induction conventions).
Then (Verification, steps 2.1 and 3.1):
(i) carries the canonical -label grading with for and otherwise; each is finite dimensional (there are only finitely many words in the of a given root degree), and is the highest line. With this grading is a -graded type-one quantum weight module (Quantum weight modules, weights in , and integrability) and is a highest weight vector: , , .
(ii) (Universal property) For every left -module and every with and for all there is a unique -module map with ; if is cyclic, this map is surjective. When is a -graded type-one module and , the map is grading-preserving.
(iii) The sum of all proper graded submodules of is a proper graded submodule, and
is the simple highest weight quotient: it has no nonzero proper graded submodule, and it is the unique simple graded quotient of up to isomorphism (Submodule of a module). Thus the maximal proper submodule occurring here is the sum of all proper graded submodules, not an arbitrarily chosen maximal one; no choice is used.
If the pairing separates , then every submodule of is graded, is the unique maximal proper submodule, and is the ordinary simple (not only graded-simple) quotient: this is the usual simple weight-module quotient of the Verma module over a separating torus (Verification, step 4.1).
The contravariant Cartan-projection lemma

identifies with the radical of the normalized Verma contravariant
form and gives the canonical normalized form on ; for
dominant integral, the existence theorem
thm-integrable-quantum-highest-weight-module-exists-and-is-unique proves the
ordinary simplicity and the universal integrable conclusions. Both are
declared obligations of those later items, not assumptions here.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A symmetrizable Cartan datum with , its Drinfeld–Jimbo algebra, the subalgebras , and a weight .
Triangular decomposition: the multiplication map is a vector-space isomorphism; consequently the multiplication map is also a vector-space isomorphism, and is a free right -module with basis any basis of ; is a subalgebra, and and are both the scalars (Triangular decomposition of a quantized enveloping algebra).
, the group algebra of , via ; in particular , , and evaluation is a well-defined algebra homomorphism (Triangular decomposition of a quantized enveloping algebra (ii), Positive, negative and toral quantum subalgebras and their root gradings).
is generated by the and presented by the positive Serre relations; hence the augmentation with and is a well-defined algebra homomorphism. The root grading makes graded subalgebras with and , where (Triangular decomposition of a quantized enveloping algebra (ii)-(iii), Positive, negative and toral quantum subalgebras and their root gradings).
For , the commutator construction gives , where both skew coefficients have degree . Moving their toral factors to the right shows that , with the second summand zero if (Kashiwara's skew derivations and on the negative half).
Root components of the negative half are finite dimensional: for , a word of degree has exactly letters , so only finitely many words occur; they span (Positive, negative and toral quantum subalgebras and their root gradings).
Verification
is well defined: is graded with by [F3], so every has a unique decomposition with and . Define with as in [F2] and ; this is -linear and well defined by the uniqueness of the decomposition. It is multiplicative: for , ; if both factors lie in and is multiplicative; if then , and symmetrically for . Also . Hence is a well-defined left -module.
By [F1] the map , , is a vector-space isomorphism compatible with right multiplication by , so is a free right -module on any basis of ; tensoring over with gives a linear isomorphism , . Hence with the component and unless with ; each component is finite dimensional and the top component is by [F5]. The scalar conditions hold: because acts on by and ; ; and . For the containment use [F4]: -terms with when , and ; combined with the -eigenvalue computation this realizes as a -graded type-one module with the stated grading.
Universal property: the -module map , , is well defined exactly because and , i.e. because acts as prescribed; the map is balanced because for , and therefore defines a -module map . Any such map is determined by , so it is unique, and it is surjective when . If is -graded and , the map sends into because lowers labels by , so it is grading-preserving.
Proper graded submodules have zero top component: if is graded and , then (as ) and , so . Hence every proper graded submodule has , and then for any family of proper graded submodules, because the -component of a finite sum of vectors is the sum of components. Thus , the sum of all proper graded submodules, is proper, graded, and contains every proper graded submodule.
The quotient is nonzero and inherits the -grading. If is a graded submodule, its preimage is graded and contains ; if then is proper graded, so and . Hence has no nonzero proper graded submodule. If is any simple graded quotient with graded, then is proper graded (else the quotient is ), so , and is a graded submodule of ; if it is nonzero, and it is proper because , contradicting simplicity. Hence and the graded-simple quotient is unique. Finally assume the pairing separates : then any submodule is graded, because the act semisimply on (by the label grading of step 2.1 and the eigenvalue prescription) and — for a finite sum , fix and for each choose distinguishing their characters. The product sends to and preserves , so every component lies in ; here the label spaces coincide with the simultaneous eigenspaces by separation, so this is the usual weight decomposition. Therefore all proper submodules are proper graded, is the unique maximal proper submodule, and is the ordinary simple quotient of the Verma module. The identifications of with the radical of the contravariant form and the dominant-integral simplicity statements are the declared content of lem-cartan-projection-constructs-the-quantum-verma-contravariant-form and thm-integrable-quantum-highest-weight-module-exists-and-is-unique, both of which are proved on this page.
