How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The contravariant form on an integrable highest weight module
Definition
Let be a symmetrizable Cartan datum with for all (Symmetrizable Cartan data for quantum groups) and let be its Drinfeld–Jimbo algebra (The Drinfeld-Jimbo quantized enveloping algebra by generators and relations). The linear contravariant anti-involution of is defined on generators by
extended as an anti-algebra map, . It is -linear, preserves the torus (it does not invert it), and is an involution (Verification, step 1.1). It is distinct from the semilinear contravariant anti-involution with , , , of The Chevalley involution, bar involution, and contravariant anti-involution preserve the Drinfeld–Jimbo ideal.
Let be dominant integral (Kac moody integral and dominant integral weights), so for all , and let be a normalized highest weight module: is a -graded type-one quantum weight module (Quantum weight modules, weights in , and integrability) with , for all , and . (The normalized simple highest weight module is the companion construction later on this page; the present definition applies to any normalized highest weight module, in particular to the Verma module and to its simple quotient.)
A contravariant form on is a bilinear form such that
(i) is symmetric: for all ;
(ii) is homogeneous for the label grading: whenever the two labels have different toral characters, that is, whenever for some ;
(iii) (the normalization);
(iv) is -invariant: for all and all .
Because is -linear and fixes the torus, condition (iv) is equivalent to the adjunction displays
for all , and (Verification, step 2.1).
For dominant and the normalized simple highest weight
module, such a form exists, is unique, and is nondegenerate on ;
moreover distinct label-weight spaces with distinct characters are orthogonal
by (ii). Uniqueness is proved here (Verification, step 2.2), as is the
orthogonality; consequently, when the pairing separates , the distinct
label-weight spaces of are orthogonal and the restriction of
to each finite-dimensional label-weight space is nondegenerate (Verification,
step 4.1). The
existence, the identification of the radical on the Verma module and the
descent to are proved in the local Cartan-projection lemma
lem-cartan-projection-constructs-the-quantum-verma-contravariant-form, which
is the declared justification of this definition. That lemma is proved on this
page, and its statement is the supplier of the existence and nondegeneracy
clauses above; establishing those clauses is its content rather than a claim of
this definition.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A symmetrizable Cartan datum with , its Drinfeld–Jimbo algebra with defining ideal on the free algebra on the generators (The Drinfeld-Jimbo quantized enveloping algebra by generators and relations), and a normalized highest weight module as above.
where is generated by the toral relations , ; the toral-action relations and ; the mixed relations ; and the two Serre sums (The Drinfeld-Jimbo quantized enveloping algebra by generators and relations).
The toral relations give and , ; in particular and , because (Symmetrizable Cartan data for quantum groups, The Drinfeld-Jimbo quantized enveloping algebra by generators and relations).
The datum has and , so (Symmetrizable Cartan data for quantum groups).
The triangular decomposition: as a vector space; and , so ; the label spaces satisfy unless , and (Triangular decomposition of a quantized enveloping algebra, Positive, negative and toral quantum subalgebras and their root gradings).
Semilinearity of and the linearity of : fixes and is -linear, while applies and inverts the torus (The Chevalley involution, bar involution, and contravariant anti-involution preserve the Drinfeld–Jimbo ideal).
Verification
Define on the free algebra by the stated values on generators, extended as a -linear anti-algebra map. Every image of a defining relation lies in : the toral relations are fixed or reversed; for the toral-action relation one gets by [F2], and the -variant is analogous; for the mixed relation with one gets by [F2], and for the image is ; since and , the first bracket equals and the second equals (using and from [F2], [F3]), so their difference vanishes; finally with , a multiple of a defining relation, and . To check the common scalar, write and move all toral factors left. The crossing exponent is , since ; the negative case uses with the same exponent. Hence descends to an anti-algebra endomorphism of ; since fixes every generator and is an algebra endomorphism (), , so is an involutive anti-automorphism, -linear, with and distinct from the semilinear of [F5].
If satisfies condition (iv), then for one gets the three displays by substituting , , . Conversely, assume the three displays hold. Let be the set of with for all . It contains (since and ) and the generators; if , then by step 1.1, so . Hence , which is condition (iv). In particular fixes the torus, so : the form is toral-invariant and not toral-inverting.
Uniqueness holds even without assuming symmetry or homogeneity. For two normalized -contravariant bilinear forms put . For every nonempty negative word , , and contravariance applied to gives ; for the empty word this is normalization. Since , . For and arbitrary , contravariance now gives . Thus , and this uniqueness may be applied to a form and its transpose before symmetry is established.
Homogeneity and orthogonality of different characters: let , and . By step 2.1, ; since unless the characters agree, whenever . This is condition (ii), restated as a proved orthogonality: label-weight spaces with different characters are orthogonal, so under a separating pairing distinct label-weight spaces are orthogonal.
In the separating case, nondegeneracy of the global form passes to each finite-dimensional label-weight space: if the pairing separates and satisfies , then for every by step 3.1 and by assumption, so lies in the radical of on ; hence whenever is nondegenerate on . The remaining clauses are the content of the Cartan-projection lemma: for dominant and the normalized simple highest weight module, lem-cartan-projection-constructs-the-quantum-verma-contravariant-form constructs the normalized homogeneous -invariant form on the Verma module (existence), identifies its radical with the maximal proper graded submodule, descends it to and proves nondegeneracy of the descended form. By step 2.2 that descended form is the unique one satisfying (i)-(iv). The existence and nondegeneracy clauses of this definition are thus delegated to that declared supplier, which is proved on this page; every other clause of the definition is proved above.
