How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Jump and average conventions for symmetric interior-penalty DG
Definition
Let and let be a finite matching affine simplicial mesh of a bounded polyhedral open set , with shape-regularity bound , as in Matching affine simplicial meshes and shape regularity. Write for its interior facets and for its boundary facets, and put . Fix a degree for this broken space. The trial functions below belong to the broken scalar polynomial space from Broken and conforming polynomial spaces on a matching mesh.
For each interior facet , choose a unit normal pointing from to . For a scalar or vector field with traces from both cells, define For a boundary facet , let be the outward unit normal and define and . Reversing the chosen interior normal also reverses , so the scalar jump/average contractions used in the form are independent of that choice.
For one-dimensional interval examples, use the following separate extension of the same formulas. At an interior point shared by a left cell and right cell , orient from left to right and set and . At either endpoint use the one-sided trace for both jump and average, and use counting measure on the zero-dimensional face. This extension is not an instance of the published mesh definition above.
The following diagram records the interior orientation; the formulas above are the definitions, and the diagram is only a convention aid.
Remarks
This is the scalar-jump convention: on an interior facet the corresponding vector jump is . On a boundary facet the jump is the trace itself; this is the convention that makes the penalty and consistency terms impose homogeneous Dirichlet data weakly. A normal-flux contraction with the scalar jump is unchanged when the interior orientation is reversed.

2 results within one dependency step of this one, each drawn at its shortest distance from it. An arrow runs from a result to what uses it, so the chart reads left to right and ends at this result, which carries a heavier outline. Every node is a link to that result.
