How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
A nonfree maximal Cohen--Macaulay module
Example
Assume the Axiom of Choice. Let be a field, and . Then is a nonfree maximal Cohen--Macaulay -module.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The Axiom of Choice and the displayed ring and module. Finite polynomial rings over a field are Noetherian and have dimension equal to their number of variables; localizations of Noetherian rings are Noetherian (If is Noetherian then is Noetherian for every , A polynomial ring in n variables over a field has dimension n, Every quotient and every localisation of a Noetherian ring is Noetherian). Completion of a Noetherian local ring is Noetherian local and preserves its dimension under the assumed choice premise (Completion of a Noetherian local ring is local with the same residue field, Completion preserves dimension and Hilbert-Samuel data). A one-variable series is a unit exactly when its constant coefficient is nonzero (A formal power series is a unit exactly when its constant coefficient is a unit).
Verification
For , the coordinate localization is Noetherian local. Its dimension is : the coordinate-prime chain has length , while localization cannot increase the dimension of the polynomial ring. The quotients are the degree- truncated polynomial rings. Their inverse limit is the formal power series ring , because compatible truncations determine exactly one coefficient for every monomial and multiplication agrees coefficientwise. The completion results in the Given paragraph make this series ring Noetherian local of dimension , with maximal ideal generated by its variables and residue field .
Put . Its quotient is Noetherian local. Every prime of containing contains or . Each quotient and has only the primes and its maximal ideal: every nonzero one-variable series is a unit times a power of its variable. Hence the primes of are , and , and .
The cyclic -module is nonzero and finite. Multiplication by is injective on it, and is nonzero, so . If is any -regular element, its image in is for some and unit . The nonzero class of in is annihilated by both and , hence by the maximal ideal. Thus no second element of that ideal is regular on , and .
By step 2.1 and the definition of maximal Cohen--Macaulay, . The class of in is nonzero (reduce modulo ) but annihilates all of ; a nonzero free -module has zero annihilator. Therefore is nonfree.
