How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The maximal abelian cover retracts onto the cover over the compact link exterior
Statement
Assume the Axiom of Choice and the data in the definition of the maximal-abelian-cover Alexander module for a nonempty oriented smooth link . Let be the inclusion of the compact exterior into the open complement, and let be the maximal abelian cover. Then is a strong deformation retract of , the restricted covering is the connected maximal abelian cover of , and the lifted deformation retract is equivariant under the deck group. The inclusion identifies with and preserves the positive-meridian classes. In particular, inclusion induces a -module isomorphism

Facts & Assumptions
Given: AC; the link, its chosen pairwise-disjoint closed normal disk tubes , the compact exterior , the open complement , a basepoint , and the maximal abelian cover .
AC is assumed in the maximal-abelian-cover definition and its link-complement supplier (The Axiom of Choice).
The cover is the connected regular cover classified by the kernel of abelianization, and its deck group is (The maximal-abelian-cover Alexander module of an oriented link).
A homotopy of maps into a base of a covering, together with an initial lift, has a unique homotopy lift (Existence and uniqueness of homotopy lifts through a covering map).
Paths lift uniquely from a prescribed point of a covering fibre (Existence and uniqueness of path lifts through a covering map).
Connected covers of a path-connected, locally path-connected, semilocally simply connected space are classified by their induced fundamental-group subgroups (Connected covering spaces are classified by conjugacy classes of fundamental-group subgroups).
A map defined continuously on the members of a finite closed cover, with agreeing restrictions on overlaps, is continuous (Continuity may be checked on any open cover, and on any finite closed cover; composites of continuous maps are continuous).
The link complement is a connected smooth three-manifold under AC (The complement of an oriented link is a connected smooth three-manifold).
In a connected regular covering, the deck group acts transitively on each fibre (A connected covering is regular exactly when its induced subgroup is normal, exactly when deck transformations act transitively on a fibre).
A deformation retract is fixed pointwise by a homotopy from the identity to the retraction-inclusion composite (Retractions and deformation retracts, with a deformation retraction required to fix the retract pointwise).
Inclusion of a deformation retract induces an isomorphism on fundamental groups at every basepoint in the retract (A retract induces an injection on fundamental groups, and a deformation retract induces an isomorphism).
Homotopic maps induce the same homomorphism on singular homology (Homotopic maps induce the same map on singular homology).
Proof
For , write and define On set . The formula is continuous on each punctured tube and agrees with the identity on its boundary . The products with of the finitely many punctured closed tubes and form a finite closed cover of ; [F5] therefore makes continuous. It starts at the identity, fixes pointwise, and at maps every punctured tube to its boundary, so it is a strong deformation retraction onto .
The link complement is path-connected by [F6], so its deformation retract is path-connected. The tube construction makes a smooth manifold with boundary, hence locally path-connected and semilocally simply connected. By [F8] and [F9], inclusion induces an isomorphism . By [F8] and [F10], it also induces an isomorphism . The positive meridians lie in and map to the same classes, so the meridian basis is preserved. An -loop closes in the restricted cover exactly when its image under lies in , so the component containing induces the subgroup This subgroup is exactly the kernel of the abelianization of because is an isomorphism. To check connectedness, take , a path in from to , and a lift from a chosen point over . Any other point over is for some deck transformation , by [F7]. Surjectivity of gives a loop in whose lift from ends at . The reverse of , this lifted loop, and concatenate to a path in from to . Thus the restriction is connected. By [F4] it is the connected maximal abelian cover of , with the same deck group .
Apply [F2] to with initial lift the identity of . For a point over , its constant path is a lift of its path under ; uniqueness makes the lifted homotopy fix every point of . At time the image lies in , so the lifted homotopy is a strong deformation retraction of onto that restricted cover.
For every deck transformation , the maps and lift the same homotopy and agree at . Uniqueness in [F2] makes them equal. The retraction is therefore deck-equivariant, and its induced isomorphism on first homology is -linear. By [F1] the target homology of the full cover is , proving the asserted module isomorphism.
