How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Gray-code synthesis of a multiplexed Z rotation
Statement
For control bits and real angles , define If , this multiplexed rotation has an exact circuit with one-qubit gates and CNOTs; for it is one gate and no CNOT. The CNOT count includes the final parity-restoring CNOT.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: Ordered control and target wires, the exact convention above, and access to arbitrary one-qubit rotations and ordered CNOT gates.
Exact one-qubit gates and rotations defines as an exact one-qubit rotation.
The Pauli matrices gives and in the ordered qubit basis.
, , and gives for real .
CNOT and Control-Target Order maps a control-target basis pair to ; thus on a fixed control bit the target action is .
Finite circuit syntax and ordered wire labels fixes ordered wire supports and chronological gate lists; Denotational semantics of a finite layered circuit assigns their exact chronological matrix product.
Finite circuit resource accounting counts each declared gate occurrence once.
Proof
If , take the one-element mask list containing the empty string. If , construct the reflected Gray list recursively by and for . Induction shows that each -bit string occurs once, consecutive strings differ in one coordinate, and the last string differs from the first in one coordinate; hence for the cycle has single-coordinate transitions. For its masks set and . Then because the inner sum factors as , equal to for and otherwise.
Assume . Apply and follow the cyclic Gray list, placing one CNOT on the coordinate that changes between consecutive masks and one at each mask, including the CNOT that returns from the last mask to the first. There are exactly of each. On a fixed control word , the accumulated target bit flip before the th rotation is modulo two by [F5]. By [F2]–[F4], ; direct multiplication with [F3] gives . Conjugating the target rotation by that parity network therefore gives . The final CNOT restores the parity network, so the full branch operator is the product of these rotations.
Rotations about the same axis satisfy by multiplying their diagonal matrices. Thus on branch the target operation is by step 1.1. This proves the exact block action on every computational basis input and hence, by linearity, on every state. When , the definition is the single gate .
