How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The shifted Hochschild cochains form a differential graded Lie algebra
Statement
Let be a unital associative real algebra and use the cochains, standard Hochschild differential , and Gerstenhaber bracket of Hochschild cochains, differential, and Gerstenhaber insertion bracket. Give shifted degree , and put , where . Then , , is a differential graded Lie algebra: the bracket has degree zero and satisfies graded skew-symmetry and Jacobi; has degree , squares to zero, and obeys For , . In particular, the standard Hochschild cochains form a cochain complex. When , the normalized multidifferential cochains are closed under both and .
Here a differential graded Lie algebra means a graded Lie bracket and a degree-one square-zero differential satisfying the displayed signed derivation rule. The base field is , so division by is valid.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: A unital associative real algebra , its multiplication , and the cochains, differential, and insertion bracket defined in [F1].
Hochschild cochains, differential, and Gerstenhaber insertion bracket: a -cochain has shifted degree ; is the signed sum of all insertions of into , , and is the displayed Hochschild coboundary.
Proof
Write for insertion of a -cochain into slot of a -cochain, with slots numbered from , so . In , terms where is inserted into the block occupied by cancel. If that block starts at slot and is inserted into its local slot , the first expression has coefficient , while the second has coefficient ; these exponents agree. Every remaining term is a pair of insertions into distinct original slots of . For original slots , the coefficient with inserted first and second is ; with the insertion order swapped it is . Their ratio is . The same comparison for puts the earlier insertion first and gives that same ratio. Thus, with and ,
Since has shifted degree , by associativity of . Thus has degree .
The bracket is graded skew by its defining formula. Put . Expanding the graded Jacobi identity, the difference between its right and left sides is Step 1.1 gives , , and . Substitution cancels the six terms in three pairs, proving graded Jacobi.
Apply the graded Jacobi identity from step 2.1 with the first two entries equal to . It gives , so over . Applying the same identity with entries gives . Hence these operations form a differential graded Lie algebra.
Substitute and into the insertion formula in [F1]. The two outer insertions give and . The internal insertions give . Comparing this with the displayed formula for in [F1] gives . Since , this also proves .
If a normalized cochain is evaluated on a tuple containing , every insertion term vanishes: the unit either enters the inner cochain, which is normalized, or remains an input of the outer one. In , the only potentially nonzero terms when are the two neighboring products (or the corresponding endpoint product and boundary term); they have identical cochain arguments and opposite signs, so cancel. Finally, finite compositions of local finite-order differential operators remain finite-order differential operators by the product and chain rules. Thus the normalized multidifferential cochains are closed under the differential and the bracket.
