How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Symmetry and uniform ellipticity of the effective tensor

Statement

Under the scalar periodic ellipticity hypotheses of Uniformly elliptic periodic scalar diffusion data, the matrix A∗ of Periodic correctors and effective tensor is symmetric and satisfies λ∣p∣2≤p⋅A∗p≤Λ∣p∣2(p∈Rd).

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The measurable periodic scalar coefficient satisfies λ≤a≤Λ, the mean-zero cell corrector exists uniquely, and periodic gradients have zero cell mean.

[F1]

Periodic correctors and effective tensor: A∗p=∫Ya(p+∇χp) and χp is the mean-zero corrector.

[F2]

Existence and uniqueness of periodic cell correctors: the corrector is linear in p and satisfies the cell variational equation.

[F3]

Mean-zero Poincare inequality on the periodic cell: ∫Y∇v=0 for periodic H1 functions; in particular ∫Y∇χp=0.

[F4]

Uniformly elliptic periodic scalar diffusion data: λ≤a≤Λ almost everywhere and ∣Y∣=1.

Proof

1.1F1F2algebra

Test the corrector equation for χp with χq. It gives ∫Ya(p+∇χp)⋅∇χq=0. Interchanging p,q gives ∫Ya(q+∇χq)⋅∇χp=0. Thus p⋅A∗q=∫Ya(p+∇χp)⋅(q+∇χq)=q⋅A∗p, where the first equality follows from [F1] after adding the zero term with ∇χp, and the last integral is symmetric in p,q. Hence A∗ is symmetric.

2.1F3F4step 1.1algebra

Taking q=p in the same identity yields p⋅A∗p=∫Ya∣p+∇χp∣2. Since the mean of p+∇χp is p by [F3], Cauchy--Schwarz on the unit-measure cell gives ∫Y∣p+∇χp∣2≥∣p∣2. The lower coefficient bound in [F4] proves p⋅A∗p≥λ∣p∣2.

3.1F1F2F4step 2.1algebra∎

The cell equation makes χp the minimizer of Jp(v)=∫Ya∣p+∇v∣2 over v∈V#. Indeed, for v=χp+w, expansion gives Jp(v)=Jp(χp)+2∫Ya(p+∇χp)⋅∇w+∫Ya∣∇w∣2, whose middle term is zero and last term is nonnegative. Taking the competitor v=0 gives p⋅A∗p=Jp(χp)≤Jp(0)=∫Ya∣p∣2≤Λ∣p∣2.
