How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

A dimension-six scalar operator reduced by integration by parts and the leading equation

Example

Let M=R1,3 have metric η=diag⁡(−1,1,1,1) and use natural units c=ℏ=1. Let ϕ:M→R be a smooth compactly supported real scalar field of engineering dimension one. Let m≥0 and Λ>0 have mass dimension one, let g,C∈R be dimensionless, and let ϵ be a dimensionless formal parameter with ϵ2=0. For dimension bookkeeping, adjoin a central formal scalar Ms of engineering weight one and specialize Ms=m only after forming homogeneous expressions. Let W^6 be the finite complex vector space of polynomials of weight six in Ms and the scalar field jets, with derivative cutoff two and field-degree cutoff six; take the symmetry group to be trivial. Let R^6 be spanned by its total divergences and the density ϕ3E^0, where E^0=□ϕ−Ms2ϕ−(g/6)ϕ3, and write Q^6=W^6/R^6. For compactly supported densities define I[f]=∫Mf d4x and impose I(∂μJμ)=0 for every compactly supported current. Write □=ημν∂μ∂ν and set

S0[ϕ]=I ⁣[−12∂μϕ ∂μϕ−12m2ϕ2−g4!ϕ4],O6=ϕ2∂μϕ ∂μϕ,

with Sϵ=S0+ϵ(C/Λ2)I(O6). After specializing Ms=m, the leading Euler derivative is E0=□ϕ−m2ϕ−(g/6)ϕ3. In Q^6,

[O6]=−13[Ms2ϕ4]−g18[ϕ6].

The identity-leading local change of variables ϕ↦ϕ+ϵCϕ3/(3Λ2) transforms the action through this order to

Sϵ ⁣[ϕ+ϵCϕ33Λ2]=S0[ϕ]−ϵCm23Λ2I(ϕ4)−ϵCg18Λ2I(ϕ6).

The mass spurion gives each term in the quotient identity weight six. Give the formal coefficient Λ−1 weight −1; multiplying the identity by C/Λ2 then places every term in a finite weight-four action-density space, and F[ϕ]E0 lies in that space for F[ϕ]=−Cϕ3/(3Λ2). The map uses the convention Ψ(ϕ)=ϕ−ϵF[ϕ], and ϵF has the units of ϕ. This is a formal scalar-action calculation under the stated boundary convention; it asserts neither a physical realization nor an on-shell scattering result.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: the field, couplings, dimensions, cutoff and degree bounds, formal parameter, action, and boundary convention in the Example.

[A1]

The Axiom of Choice: full AC is adopted in the current A-page prerequisite chain.

[F1]

Finite-jet local operators and engineering dimension: fixed derivative, polynomial-degree and engineering-weight bounds define a finite jet-polynomial operator space, with derivative weight one and field weight given by its declared engineering dimension; the example adjoins the explicitly declared finite-degree mass spurion.

[F2]

Finite-order invariant operator-basis quotient: an invariant operator quotient is the invariant vector space modulo its specified relation subspace, and it records precisely that declared relation space.

[F3]

Fixed-order integration-by-parts and leading-equation field-redefinition relations: under a compact-support no-boundary convention and the displayed variational-derivative convention, the identity-leading map Ψk(ϕ)=ϕ−ϵkF[ϕ] is formally invertible through the retained order and changes Sϵ by −ϵkI(FaEa(0))+O(ϵk+1).

Verification

1.1givenalgebra

For a compactly supported variation h, the kinetic variation is −I(∂μh ∂μϕ)=I(h□ϕ), since ∂μ(h∂μϕ) integrates to zero. The potential variation is I(h(−m2ϕ−gϕ3/6)). Thus DS0[ϕ](h)=I(hE0) with the displayed E0.

1.2givenF1algebra

The field has weight one and each derivative has weight one, so O6 has weight six; Ms2ϕ4 and gϕ6 also have weight six. Their derivative orders and field degrees lie within the stated cutoffs, so the displayed identity concerns elements of the declared finite operator space.

1.3givenalgebra

The product rule gives ∂μ(ϕ3∂μϕ)=3ϕ2∂μϕ∂μϕ+ϕ3□ϕ. The boundary convention therefore yields I(ϕ3□ϕ)=−3I(O6).

2.1givenF2step 1.3algebra

Before specialization, substituting E^0=□ϕ−Ms2ϕ−gϕ3/6 into step 1.3 gives I(ϕ3E^0)=−3I(O6)−I(Ms2ϕ4)−(g/6)I(ϕ6). Each density has weight six, and the relation subspace contains this leading-equation density and the divergence from step 1.3. The quotient definition [F2] therefore gives the displayed class identity.

2.2givenA1F3step 1.1algebra

Put a=C/(3Λ2) and use [F3] with k=1 and F[ϕ]=−aϕ3, so its map ϕ−ϵF[ϕ] is ϕ+ϵaϕ3. Its units are those of ϕ, and its first-order action change is −ϵI(FE0)=ϵaI(ϕ3E0), as also follows from step 1.1. Since ϵ2=0, substituting the shifted field into the order-ϵ term changes that term only by zero in the truncated ring.

3.1givenstep 2.1step 2.2algebra∎

Specialize Ms=m in step 2.1, insert that identity into step 2.2, and add the original +ϵ(C/Λ2)I(O6) term. Its coefficient cancels because 3a=C/Λ2, leaving exactly the quartic and sextic shifts displayed in the Example.
