How statement and proof provenance work

The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.

  • Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
  • AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
  • AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.

These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.

Force on a held charge above a grounded plane in the image model

Physical scope

The external electrostatic force on an ideal point charge held at height a above an ideal grounded conducting plane, within the declared image model: the mirror field at the charge is -(q/(16 pi epsilon_0 a^2)) e_3 and the adopted external Lorentz coupling gives the attractive force -(q^2/(16 pi epsilon_0 a^2)) e_3 with self-field excluded. The item asserts no measurement, no motion, no radiation, no finite-geometry fringe corrections and no self-force. The attraction is strict for q≠0 and the force vanishes for q=0; holding the charge requires the opposite support force. This is the electric contribution at rest, not a sole-force trajectory solution.

Example

Assume the Countable Choice convention of The image-method certificate for a point charge above a grounded plane and The localized Newtonian potential and the ideal point-charge Coulomb field (The Axiom of Countable Choice (ACω)). In the ideal grounded-plane configuration of The image-method certificate for a point charge above a grounded plane: vacuum half-space H={x3>0}, point charge parameter q∈R at p=ae3 (a>0), field EI given by the image potential, and EI has the Coulomb singularity (q/(4πε0))(x−p)/∣x−p∣3 of the source charge as x→p (The localized Newtonian potential and the ideal point-charge Coulomb field(d), The electric and magnetic fields as fixed-time spatial vector fields). Split the field near p as

EI(x)=Eq(x)+Eext(x),Eq(x):=q4πε0x−p∣x−p∣3(x≠p),

the self-field Eq of the source charge and the external (mirror) field Eext:=EI−Eq, which is C∞ on a neighbourhood of p (it is minus the gradient of the smooth mirror term −q/(4πε0)∣x+ae3∣−1). Then:

(a) [External field at the charge] the external field at the location of the charge is

Eext(p)=−q16πε0a2 e3.

It is the negative gradient of the mirror term evaluated at p (Directional derivatives and partial derivatives of a map U⊆Rm→Rn, The chain rule for total derivatives: D(g∘f)(a)=Dg(f(a))∘Df(a), Continuity and derivatives of positive-base real powers, For a natural n≥1 the function x↦xn is differentiable everywhere with derivative ι(n) x n−1; for n=0 it is the constant 1, with derivative 0; for a natural n≥1 the function x↦x−n is differentiable at every x≠0 with derivative −ι(n) x−n−1; consequently every polynomial function is differentiable at every real, with the derivative computed term by term, Sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients: (f+g)′(c)=f′(c)+g′(c), (αf)′(c)=αf′(c), (fg)′(c)=f′(c)g(c)+f(c)g′(c), and (f/g)′(c)=(f′(c)g(c)−f(c)g′(c))/g(c)2 when g(c)≠0, The Euclidean inner product ⟨x,y⟩=∑k<nxkyk on Rn).

(b) [Force on the held charge] under the adopted external Lorentz coupling The Lorentz coupling: external force on a test charge and the continuum force and power densities(i) at zero velocity, a test particle of charge q held at p experiences the electric force

F=q Eext(p)=−q216πε0a2 e3,

strictly attractive toward the plane when q≠0 and zero when q=0, of magnitude q2/(16πε0a2); the particle's own field is excluded from the coupling by the postulate, so the result is a two-body-style external force of the mirror field and is not a self-force.

(c) [Reading and scope] for either nonzero sign of q the force is attractive (the magnitude depends on q2), while q=0 gives zero force; the induced total plane charge is −q and its distribution is concentrated under the charge; the example is the exact ideal-model result for a held point charge, an ideal grounded plane and the adopted static external force law. It asserts no measurement, no dynamics of the charge (no motion or radiation), no finite-plane or finite-conductor correction, no self-force and no claim that the pair of idealisations is realised by an apparatus; the source is the idealised stationary point charge of The image-method certificate for a point charge above a grounded plane(e), not a declared compact-source model. Here the displayed force is the electric contribution at rest. Holding the charge at p requires a balancing support force Fsupport=−F; the held trajectory is not asserted to solve the equation with the electric Lorentz force as its sole force.

Facts & Assumptions

Given: The ideal grounded-plane configuration of The image-method certificate for a point charge above a grounded plane with charge parameter q, location p=ae3, a>0, field EI=−∇φI and the split EI=Eq+Eext of the statement.

[F1]

The image certificate supplies the candidate potential and field; the mirror term u(x):=−(q/(4πε0))∣x+ae3∣−1 is C∞ on the ball ∣x−p∣<a because ∣x+ae3∣≥a>0 there, and off the pole EI=−∇φI with φI=φqp+u, where φqp=(q/ε0)Φ(⋅−p) is the point-charge potential of the fundamental solution and Eq=−∇φqp (The image-method certificate for a point charge above a grounded plane(a),(b); The localized Newtonian potential and the ideal point-charge Coulomb field(d)).

[F2]

Derivative calculus for the mirror term: for fixed c≠0 the function x↦∣x+c∣−1 is C∞ on {∣x+c∣>0} with ∇∣x+c∣−1=−(x+c)∣x+c∣−3, by the chain and power rules and the Euclidean inner product (The chain rule for total derivatives: D(g∘f)(a)=Dg(f(a))∘Df(a), Continuity and derivatives of positive-base real powers, For a natural n≥1 the function x↦xn is differentiable everywhere with derivative ι(n) x n−1; for n=0 it is the constant 1, with derivative 0; for a natural n≥1 the function x↦x−n is differentiable at every x≠0 with derivative −ι(n) x−n−1; consequently every polynomial function is differentiable at every real, with the derivative computed term by term, Sums, scalar multiples, products and quotients: (f+g)′(c)=f′(c)+g′(c), (αf)′(c)=αf′(c), (fg)′(c)=f′(c)g(c)+f(c)g′(c), and (f/g)′(c)=(f′(c)g(c)−f(c)g′(c))/g(c)2 when g(c)≠0, Directional derivatives and partial derivatives of a map U⊆Rm→Rn, The Euclidean inner product ⟨x,y⟩=∑k<nxkyk on Rn, The finite and reverse triangle inequalities for a norm; and for n≥1 every norm N on Rn satisfies N(x)≤C∥x∥1 and is Lipschitz, hence continuous, for d2, Ck Euclidean maps and diffeomorphisms).

[F4]

The ball ∣x−p∣<a contains p and is an open neighbourhood of p (Open ball, closed ball and sphere in a metric space).

External field. By [F1], Eext=EI−Eq=−∇(φI−φqp)=−∇u on the punctured half-space, and u is C∞ on the ball ∣x−p∣<a [F1, F4]. By [F2] with c=+ae3, ∇u(x)=+q4πε0x+ae3∣x+ae3∣3 there, so at x=p=ae3 one has ∇u(p)=q4πε02ae3(2a)3=q e316πε0a2 and Eext(p)=−∇u(p)=−q16πε0a2e3. This is (a).

2.1F3step 1.1

Force. By [F3] applied at the instantaneous rest state of the held charge, the force is F=qEext(p); substituting [step 1.1] gives F=−q216πε0a2e3. This is (b).

3.1F1F3givenstep 2.1∎

Signs, magnitude and scope. Since q2≥0 with equality exactly for q=0, the vector F is a nonpositive multiple of e3: for q≠0 it points from p toward the plane and has magnitude q2/(16πε0a2), while q=0 gives F=0. The self-field Eq is excluded from the coupling by [F3], so the computation is the external mirror force and not a self-force; the induced total plane charge −q and the concentration of the induced distribution under the charge are the ideal-plane statements of The image-method certificate for a point charge above a grounded plane(e), and the held trajectory is not claimed to solve any dynamics. This is (c).
