How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Negative stationary Killing density in the Kerr ergoregion
A local sign calculation for the canonical scalar stress tensor and stationary Kerr multiplier; it makes no stability or observational claim.
Example
At an exterior point where the stationary Killing field is spacelike, let be an oriented coordinate neighborhood of , restrict the real scalar-field model to , set its potential to , fix a coupling , and let be any observer at . There is a smooth scalar field for which the associated Killing-multiplier density is negative. Thus the density is not nonnegative on all scalar first-derivative data at , so this multiplier cannot provide a pointwise nonnegative density for all such data there. If a scalar field on satisfies its scalar equation, its current is conserved. This example does not assert that an on-shell field exists with the prescribed derivative.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: An exterior Kerr point in the ergoregion, an oriented coordinate neighborhood of , an observer at , and a smooth real scalar field in the scalar model with zero potential and positive constant coupling.
Kerr horizon angular velocity and the ergoregion: is spacelike when .
Observers, rest spaces and the spatial projection at an event and The observer rest-space decomposition and the spatial projection: , is future-directed, and is positive definite.
The scalar-field matter model of the classical gravitational framework: for the candidate stress tensor is , with .
First variation, Hilbert tensor and conservation of the scalar-field model: for , , so implies .
Killing fields and conserved currents, and on-shell conservation of the Hilbert stress-energy tensor: a symmetric divergence-free tensor contracted with a Killing field gives a divergence-free current.
The smooth Lorentzian, observer, and tangent-bundle conventions use only countable choice (The Axiom of Countable Choice ()).
Verification
Because is spacelike by [F1], decompose it relative to as , where and . By [F2], if then ; set , so , , and .
Set at , where and . Then , , and vanishes on the orthogonal complement of . In the chosen chart , define by . This smooth local scalar field has . Thus and .
By [F3], at the scalar stress tensor is . Using [F4] and , . Hence the stationary Killing-multiplier density is not nonnegative on all smooth scalar first-derivative data at .
For any field that additionally satisfies , [F5] makes divergence-free and [F6] makes the associated Killing current divergence-free. This is conditional; the example does not assert existence of an on-shell solution with the selected first derivative. Step 3.1 proves that this multiplier density is not nonnegative on all smooth scalar first-derivative data at .
Remarks
The source literature also exhibits negative stationary Killing energy for particles in the ergoregion. The calculation above is for the declared massless scalar stress model and does not imply a superradiant instability or any black-hole stability conclusion.
