How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Three spin-half factors: the quartet and the two exchange-coupled doublets
Example
Use the standard Pauli matrices and let act by on tensor factor and identity on the other factors. Let for . In define These eight vectors form an orthonormal basis. With and , the -vectors form the spin- ladder and the - and -pairs form two spin- ladders. For , their lowering actions are the adjoints of the raising actions displayed below: with the highest vectors killed by and the stated subscripts giving the eigenvalues. The adjacent swaps act as identity on the quartet and on each magnetic pair and by For , set , and for real couplings define This finite-chain exchange operator is the scalar on the quartet and, on each doublet multiplicity basis , has matrix The latter matrix has eigenvalues each repeated for the two magnetic states.

Verification
The coefficient vectors of and in the ordered one-down subspace are and ; their squared norms are and their inner product is . The one-up pair has coefficient vectors and in the ordered basis , again with norm and inner product . Each -vector has norm ; the two three-term -vectors are orthogonal to the corresponding vectors because their coefficient vectors are constant while the latter have coefficient sum zero. Vectors with different numbers of entries equal to are orthogonal. Thus the eight vectors are orthonormal, and [F1] says the ambient space has dimension eight; they are a basis.
Applying counts for each and for each , which gives the subscripts in the statement. By [F2], changes one to with coefficient . Summing over positions gives the top states are killed because their coefficients cancel or they contain no . The lowering actions are the adjoints of these raising actions because the displayed basis is orthonormal and each local lowering matrix is the adjoint of its raising matrix by [F2]. This verifies both ladder directions.
The swaps fix every symmetric -vector. On both magnetic pairs, changes the sign of and fixes , by their displayed coefficients. For the upper pair, and direct substitution gives . On the lower pair the same substitution gives These are exactly the two matrices stated.
The two matrices act on the same coordinate pair and , while and act on the magnetic labels with the same coefficients for either exchange coordinate. The two-dimensional exchange representation is irreducible: the only invariant lines of are the two coordinate axes, and mixes both axes because its off-diagonal entries are nonzero. Thus this basis displays a spin- block with trivial exchange and a two-dimensional exchange factor repeated over the two spin- magnetic states, in the factor placement of [F5].
By [F3]–[F4], each bond contributes . On the quartet both swaps are , so both 's vanish and the total is . On either doublet pair, Therefore the two bond matrices are and their real-coupled sum is the displayed doublet matrix, identical for and . For and , its trace is and determinant is ; solving the quadratic characteristic equation gives . This proves the exact block decomposition and multiplicity of these eigenvalues.
Remarks
In the English convention, the parts of a shape give the left-aligned row lengths from top to bottom. A standard tableau fills these three boxes with , each exactly once, with entries strictly increasing from left to right along rows and from top to bottom down columns. The standard tableaux below label the Specht factors of shapes and . The spin-coupling basis is a singlet/triplet coupling basis for the two-dimensional multiplicity space; it is not asserted to be the displayed tableau basis. The diagram is an index convention, not part of the proof.
