How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Null plane-wave scalar field and its conserved stress-energy tensor
Example
Let be a null covector, , with future, let be smooth, , and let in an inertial chart; take and . Then solves the massless scalar-field equation of First variation of the scalar-field action and the Euler-Lagrange equation, and its Hilbert stress-energy tensor is the conserved tensor a positive multiple of the rank-one tensor , whose generating vector is nonzero and future null, wherever and the zero tensor wherever .
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The affine Minkowski model with inertial chart , constant (Oriented time-oriented affine Minkowski space (the spacetime primitives), Lorentz forms of inertia (3,1,0) on a 4-dimensional real vector space), coordinate partials (Directional derivatives and partial derivatives of a map ); a nonzero null covector with future (, , ) (Timelike, null, spacelike and causal vectors of a Lorentz vector space, Time orientation, future and past timelike/null/causal vectors, and the closed cones); smooth , ; , ; , a smooth scalar field (C^k tensor fields on affine Minkowski space and their inertial components).
Chain rule: and . (The chain rule for total derivatives: , Directional derivatives and partial derivatives of a map )
Scalar-field equation and Hilbert tensor: the field equation of the model with potential is , and the Hilbert tensor of the density with this is . (First variation of the scalar-field action and the Euler-Lagrange equation, The Hilbert stress-energy tensor of the scalar-field action on flat spacetime)
Divergence identity: ; consequently any solution of the field equation has conserved Hilbert tensor. (Divergence identity for the scalar-field stress-energy tensor)
Verification
The field solves the massless equation. By [F1], and ; hence , because is null. With this is exactly the scalar-field equation of [F2].
The stress-energy tensor. Substituting [F1] into the Hilbert formula of [F2] with gives and , hence , which is symmetric. Wherever the coefficient is positive and is a positive multiple of the rank-one tensor with nonzero future null generating vector ; wherever all components vanish. For every future unit , ; in the inertial frame, with .
Conservation. Since solves the field equation by step 1.1, [F3] gives : the plane-wave tensor is conserved on the whole chart domain.
The example is an explicit conditional computation for the massless scalar model with a null plane-wave profile; it asserts no wave observation, no energy condition beyond the displayed nonnegativity and no measurement.
