How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
Smooth source/dust scaling and test-backreaction obstructions
Statement
Use the field, stress, matter, unit and curvature conventions of Smooth formal matter, EM tensors and observer quantities. Let be open, let be constant, and define the Einstein residual for the source-free field model by
Suppose on , and let be a smooth real two-form with and , the source-free form of the Maxwell equations in Smooth formal matter, EM tensors and observer quantities. For every real dimensionless , the field obeys those same source-free equations and
This is an exact residual identity on the fixed metric. If and is nonzero at a point, its observer energy there is positive and the residual is nonzero there; this does not estimate the distance to a different coupled solution.
Separately, let and a future timelike field with define charged dust on an open , with , , , and the formal matter-exchange equation of Smooth formal matter, EM tensors and observer quantities. For any dimensionless , replacing by multiplies and by , leaves unchanged, and leaves the dust acceleration equation unchanged when the prescribed and are held fixed. The sourced Maxwell equation must still match the changed current. If both and are scaled by , Maxwell's equations remain linear but the electromagnetic stress scales by , whereas the dust stress scales by ; no general coupled-solution family follows.
For a flat background with and , a nonzero source-free Maxwell field cannot solve the exact Einstein equation with the unchanged Minkowski metric, because its observer energy density is positive somewhere.
Finally, take with length coordinates and , Minkowski metric , standard orientation, and future direction . Let , , and use the Euclidean norm and Lebesgue volume in these Cartesian coordinates. Consider only the prescribed Coulomb profile on the finite annulus , where is a length and is a charge parameter with units . Put , , , and . Its Maxwell energy on that annulus is
Thus this fixed-charge Coulomb cutoff family has diverging shell energy as . This finite-annulus calculation asserts no point-source construction, self-field evaluation, or obstruction theorem for arbitrary regularizations.
Facts & Assumptions
Given: The formal Einstein–Maxwell matter conventions of Smooth formal matter, EM tensors and observer quantities, a fixed vacuum metric on , a smooth source-free two-form , the charged-dust exchange equation where used, and, for the Coulomb clause, , , and the prescribed radial field on .
Smooth formal matter, EM tensors and observer quantities defines and lowers both indices with ; hence . It also gives , the formal source-free equations, the dust tensors, and the SI convention , .
EM, dust and perfect-fluid energy inequalities proves that has observer energy density and that this density is positive whenever is nonzero in that observer frame. It makes no general matter positivity assumption.
Charged dust balance equivalence and advected charge ratio states that, for , the matter-exchange equation is equivalent to continuity together with .
Lorentzian exterior calculus and Hodge star gives the coordinate formula for , from which its real-linearity follows; covariant differentiation and metric raising are linear in the tensor field.
The Axiom of Countable Choice () is the exact indexed axiom : every specified sequence of nonempty sets has a choice function. Polar coordinates decompose Lebesgue measure into r^{n-1} dr d sigma assumes only this choice strength and gives the radial integration formula for every nonnegative Borel function on .
Continuity and derivatives of positive-base real powers gives and continuity of on . A continuous function on is Riemann integrable, by Heine-Cantor and Riemann's criterion states that every continuous real function on a closed nondegenerate interval is integrable there; The second fundamental theorem: if is differentiable on with and is integrable, then evaluates its integral when a differentiable primitive is supplied.
The fixed-metric vacuum and source-free field hypotheses in the first clause are independent assumptions. No Einstein or Maxwell existence theorem is used.
The Coulomb profile is assumed only on the finite annulus ; no field, source, or potential is defined at the origin.
Proof
By [F4], exterior differentiation is real-linear, so . The connection and metric raising in [F1] are linear in the field strength, so . Every term in the Maxwell tensor is quadratic in , hence .
The definitions in [F1] give and . On , . The force equation in [F3] therefore has both sides multiplied by if and are held fixed.
At any point where , choose a future unit observer and its positively oriented orthonormal rest frame. Then and cannot both vanish, since the field components are and by [F1]. With , the density formula [F2] gives . Minkowski space has ; with and , the Einstein equation would require , contradicted by this positive observer contraction and from [F1].
The Coulomb energy density on is by [F2] and from [F1], where . With denoting Lebesgue measure in Cartesian coordinates, define the nonnegative Borel function to equal when and otherwise. Then , and [F5] gives The field profile is used only on the finite annulus.
By the quadratic formula in [F1] and step 1.1, . Substituting this identity and the assumed vacuum equation into the displayed definition of gives , as claimed.
The sourced Maxwell equation is by [F1]; replacing by while leaving fixed changes its right-hand side to , so it remains the same equation only when . If instead , the Maxwell equation is preserved by linearity, but step 1.1 scales quadratically while step 1.2 scales linearly; the dust force equation then also has its left side scale by and its right side by . These unequal degrees show why this scaling is not a general coupled-solution construction, while leaving special cancellations open.
Because , the function is continuous on by [F6] and hence is integrable there. The primitive has derivative on this interval by [F6], so the fundamental theorem of calculus gives . Hence . For every , choosing gives ; therefore the shell energies diverge as at fixed .
