How statement and proof provenance work
The first chip identifies the source of the statement or construction; the second identifies the source of its local proof or verification.
- Literature-sourced: the exact statement appears in a cited source; only wording and notation differ.
- AI-adapted: a semantically identical restatement of literature-sourced material, modulo indexing, notation, and boundary cases adopted by the library.
- AI-generated: a genuinely novel statement formulated by AI, with no source for the claim itself.
These labels describe origin, not correctness: citations and verification chips remain separate evidence.
The comoving congruence is geodesic; its expansion is three Hubble parameters per unit conversion constant
Statement
Let be an FLRW model datum with conversion constant , with spacetime , metric , comoving congruence and Hubble parameter (FLRW model data: warped product metric, cosmic time, comoving congruence, scale factor and Hubble parameter, The FLRW metric is smooth Lorentzian; the comoving field is unit timelike and cosmic time parametrizes comoving curves by proper time; the slices carry the scaled spatial metric), and let be the metric-selected connection of (Metric compatibility, torsion freedom and the metric-selected connection class, Existence and uniqueness of the metric-selected connection of a nondegenerate metric, and its extension to tensor fields). Then:
(a) and ; consequently the comoving curves are geodesics of with affine parameter , the parameter is their proper time, and, when , is a geodesic unit timelike observer congruence in the sense of Observer congruences, their observer curves and adapted charts (Geodesic of an affine connection, Timelike worldlines, proper time, length and four-velocity on a Lorentzian four-manifold).
(b) The expansion of the comoving congruence (The perfect-fluid matter model: rest energy density, pressure, four-velocity and stress-energy clause (b), The inverse metric, musical isomorphisms and index raising) is the constant-in-space function
(c) For the physical four-velocity field of the comoving observers, , so that ; the acceleration of the comoving congruence, , vanishes identically (The perfect-fluid matter model: rest energy density, pressure, four-velocity and stress-energy clause (b)).
Facts & Assumptions
Given: An FLRW model datum with , its spacetime, metric, comoving congruence and Hubble parameter , a product chart with , and the metric-selected connection .
In the product chart the Christoffel symbols of are , , and (Christoffel symbols of the FLRW metric in product charts).
A curve is a geodesic of with affine parameter when in the parameter, equivalently in a chart (Geodesic of an affine connection, Christoffel symbols of an affine connection, Coordinate geodesic equation). An affine connection is real bilinear, function-linear in its first argument and satisfies (Affine connection on a smooth manifold). For a vector field , the divergence in a chart is (Existence and uniqueness of the metric-selected connection of a nondegenerate metric, and its extension to tensor fields clause (c), The inverse metric, musical isomorphisms and index raising).
The comoving curves have tangent and are the future timelike worldlines whose parameter is proper time (The FLRW metric is smooth Lorentzian; the comoving field is unit timelike and cosmic time parametrizes comoving curves by proper time; the slices carry the scaled spatial metric, Timelike worldlines, proper time, length and four-velocity on a Lorentzian four-manifold). The expansion and the acceleration of a smooth unit timelike congruence are defined by and (The perfect-fluid matter model: rest energy density, pressure, four-velocity and stress-energy, Observer congruences, their observer curves and adapted charts).
Proof
(The comoving curves are geodesics.) In the product chart the vector field has components , so for the chart expression of [L2] is for by [L1]. Hence . Multiplying by and using the function-linearity and Leibniz rules of [L2] gives . Therefore each comoving curve of [L3], whose tangent is , satisfies : it is a geodesic with affine parameter , and by [L3] its parameter is proper time. If , the nonempty interval gives a nonempty product , open in itself, and [L3] supplies the smooth future unit timelike field ; thus it is an observer congruence on in the exact sense of Observer congruences, their observer curves and adapted charts, with vanishing geodesic acceleration as just proved. If , all pointwise tensor and geodesic assertions are vacuous, and no observer-congruence designation is made. This is claim (a).
(Expansion.) In the product chart, has components and , all of them constant as functions on the chart domain, so . The divergence formula of [L2] therefore gives . By [L1], and for each (no sum over in the symbol, and the three indices each contribute ), so . This is claim (b).
(Physical velocity and vanishing acceleration.) Since , linearity gives , hence . For the acceleration, by step 1.1. This is claim (c).
(Conclusion.) Step 1.1 proves the geodesic property and the affine/proper-time reading of claim (a); step 1.2 computes the expansion of claim (b); and step 2.1 proves the physical-velocity divergence identity and the vanishing acceleration of claim (c). No step used a field equation or a matter model beyond the definitions recalled in [L3], and the inherited assumption is the one carried by the tangent-bundle and connection suppliers.
Remarks
-
Reading of the factor. The unit-normalized congruence has , whereas the physical four-velocity field has in the sense of inverse seconds; the factor reflects the normalization and the unit conventions of the framework. The statement of the lemma is purely kinematic: it computes the divergence of a specified vector field on a specified metric and asserts no dynamical equation and no measurement.
-
Volume reading. In the adapted chart the divergence identity says that the fractional rate of change of the spatial volume element along the congruence is , ; this is the kinematic content used by the continuity equation later on this page and is not a conservation law by itself.
